    1. .txt files formatting
    2. Hi all - I've got several lengthy cemetery lists I want to post, and formatting is an issue. If the columns don't stay lined up the report is hard to decipher. Column 1 is name, column 2 is birth date, column 3 is death date, etc. I can't figure out how to save in a .txt file and have straight columns - it just puts spaces between the columns rather than a tab. I could create in a table but that's about 250k vs. 56k for a text file. This is small compared to a couple of the other lists I want to load. Anyone have any suggestions on how to add these files to the site that will be quick for people to load, but be legible, too? THANKS!! If it has been saved as a .doc file, she should re-save as text *before* doing the cut and paste. Valorie

AOL's browser for some reason won't work when pasting onto the boards using the menu--but the keyboard command works just fine. Joan

    3. Overstriking the names sounds like a good option to me. I've had people correct the info I posted from books, and I have added notes to the files stating the corrections and that they were corrections. Your solution seems fair, seems to me. 3. I also do some indices, and I agree with you, Cheryl. If they are in the source, they should be in the index. If you KNOW that there is an error, you can always make a note -- but the information should stay. 3. I have received e-mail, rather aggressively worded IMO, asserting that I made a mistake in one of my on-line indices. Some comments were made with a very non-PC implication. I didn't take umbrage at his saying I have mistakes; I know I do. For one thing there's a misspelt name. The fact he asserts is error, however, is NOT one of mine. I answered that I will re-check the source; if the names are in there, they stay, right or wrong. I further pointed out that his comments were invalid (and told him why) without commenting on the implication. Now, I have re-checked the source and the names ARE in the source, in the place speficied on-line. However. The entry is incomplete and what is written has been carefully lined thru (once) as has the note See Other Book. The Other Book has the complete entry, underscored. I clearly decided the first time thru that since they WERE there and since they WERE legible, I should include them. I can strike-over the names in HTML, just as they were in the book, if I have to, but I still feel that they were in the source, they should be in the index. What say ye? Yours doesn't work for me either. Mine does on: http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ So I checked out your coding - found the cause. You only have one front slash, /, in all the URLs for freefind in the coding. You have http:/search .... while it should read http://search. What's happening is that the rootsweb server is prefixing the freefind URL with my URL, like this: wilkinson-topley.rootsweb.com/www.freefind.com so that the link to the search comes back as an invalid URL. It's worked fine for the past year, I haven't changed that HTML code. Any ideas? Nancy Wilkinson njwilk@bellsouth.net http://wilkinson-topley.rootsweb.com
