Have links from all the others to it - so that it only ever appears once on your site. You can also make it a dummy address like ddNOSPAMdennis@... - with instructions to take the NOSPAM out. Once you get on someone's list, whatever you are doing or not doing won't make a bit of difference. I've just recently changed email address, and have been laboriously changing out from the old to the new on all my GC boards -- over a hundred of them. Yet I have hardly any spam at all. When I go back to my previous address (I was pre-paid) just to pick up on anyone I forgot to notify, guess what's waiting in my mailbox? You're right, a bunch of spam. They sell the addresses to one another, and it just keeps spreading. To keep this new one relatively clean, I'm using the free filtering service at Brightmail.com . It works very well, and has caught all the spam and viruses sent my way (6, in a month), and no "good" mail, at all. Useful, free -- how can by beat that!? http://www.brightmail.com Hope this helps, Valorie Zimmerman Black Diamond, Washington USA
Hi Valorie - Well, we all know AOL won't allow Brightmail, and neither will Juno. Do you know about Earthlink? I'm thinking of changing ISP's because AOL does not filter SPAM, even though they claim to try! I get at least 10 pieces of obvious junk mail a day (low, I know, in comparison to other folks) and several that I delete that I'm not sure about. 2nd question - why doesn't this RootsWeb help list enable the [RootsWeb Help] tag at the beginning of the subject line like most other RW lists? I delete lots of mail that comes over with "somebody help me please" etc. thinking that it's spam, until I see it repeat on the list with the responses. Thanks, Valorie, and Merry Christmas. Can anyone offer any sugestions as to how to prevent spamers from "harvesting" email addresses from our sites? I'd like to continue to offer a clickable email link to myself and others on my sites but I'm considering trying a graphic link to our email instead due to the large amount of spam I'm receiving. That would force user's to type in the address manually and would still not help on GenConnect Sites. Any html solution would be very helpful if possible, even if it was not totally sucessful. Karen, >Files are transferred, but not showing up at: >http://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/NCGS You need the htm extension when you access your Nevada County Genealogical Soc. pages because you named the page NCGS.htm. Plug in: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/NCGS.htm The homepage for the soc. should probably be accessible by using only: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/ rather than NCGS.htm if you mean this site is only for the society. With http://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/ on your site, it only brings up the directory of all the pages, images, etc. you have up on-line. If I were you I would change the name of your NCGS page from NCGS.htm to index.htm. This would make the Welcome page the homepage for the society. Hmmmm...... I see you have the same page up twice with the names: Index.htm NCGS.htm If you rename the Index.htm page to index.htm with no capitals than the Welcome page will open with either: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/ or http://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/index.htm The capitalized "i" in index will not allow the index page to register as the homepage. Then you can delete the NCGS.htm page. Hmmmm.... I also see you have up-loaded all the WS_FTP program files: WS_FTP.gid WS_FTP.help WS_FTP.log WS_FTP.ini WS_FTP95.exe WSFTP32.dll ws_ftp.dll remove.exe whatsnew.txt Also the sound files *.wav from WS_FTP You don't need these Frontpage 2000 folders: _private/ _vti.cnf/ _vti.pvt/ These files and folders should be deleted from RootsWeb - not deleted from your computer >Publish Web box: file:///C:/Program Files/WS_FTP This has happened because you are publishing directly into your FTP program, WS_FTP. When your FTP program accesses RootsWeb it showed all the files in the left hand column for the program and you automatically have up-loaded everything to RootsWeb. I have set up a publishing folder for each of my Webs. I publish from FP to a folder on my computer which I have named like the following one for the USGenWeb town of Plymouth: C:\Websites\RootsWeb\macplymo When you go on-line with WS_FTP, >Local System: C:\Program Files\WS_FTP you are seeing your WS_FTP program files plus everything else you have published into it resulting in your WS_FTP program files and FrontPage files messed together. You need to publish into another specified folder and note that folder in your Local System field. I use FP 98. I don't use WS_FTP but it works more or less like my FTP client, CuteFTP. When my FTP client accesses Rootsweb it automatically shows on the left side a specific folder with the pages to up-load. My client has the fields which I have setup as: Host address: users.rootsweb.com Initial Remote Directory: public_html Initial Local Directory: C:\Websites\RootsWeb\macplymo >I click on: public_html With my configuration I don't have to select anything, it automatically goes to public_html. You might try configuring your WS_FTP to the following settings after setting up a specific publishing folder: >WS_FTP95 LE >Session Properties >Profile Name: My Homepage >Host Name: users.rootsweb.com >Host Type: Automatic detect >User ID: cancgs >Password: xxxxxxx >Local System: C:\Website\cancgs >Remote System: public_html and in FrontPage aim your publishing to something like: C:\Website\cancgs by File > "Publish FrontPage Web..." > More Webs button > type in the folder's path like C:\Website\cancgs. I too am using Front Page 2000 and had alot of problems getting it to work. Like you, I asked for help and received some advise that worked for me. So, I will pass it on to you. Try this in your publish web box - ftp://your.url.here/public_html Yours should be - ftp://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/NCGS/public_html or ftp://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/ncgs/public_html Good Luck.. For me, it was a corrupted IE. My hunch is the security updates to v5.0 caused the problem. Upgrading to v5.5 corrected it. You might try cleaning your registry first with regclean. That MIGHT correct it. Yup, that's always a problem. May I assume you have an IBM PC compatible? How old? Also: (1) What FTP are you using and what version, (2)what other applications do you have open at that time, and (3) how much memory do you have? Cheryl It is easy to rearrange your sub-directory structure with the right software. With WS-FTP Pro (the full featured version) all I have to do is to point to a directory, filename or filenames to be moved in the remote directory window, right-click and pick the move command from the popup menu. Type in the destination sub-directory name and hit enter. I moved about a thousand headstone photographs by that method up two directory levels and then down three levels in a different sub-directory tree the last time I reorganized. The only "gotcha" is that you have to enter the destination directory name relative to where the file currently resides. For example: new_directory - Would move the file into the subdirectory "new_directory" ../new_directory - Would back out one level and then put the file(s) in the sub-directory "new_directory" ../../directory/subdirectory - Would back out two levels and then drill down the directory/subdirectory tree. You are supposed to be able to do the same thing with WS-FTP Explorer by simply dragging the filename to the new directory, BUT the few times I tried that route WS-FTP downloaded the file to my computer and then uploaded it to the new directory instead of moving it on the host computer.
