Sharon: I don't know why your FTP program isn't showing the public_html directory. It's there. Which FTP program are you using? I use WS_FTP LE and just go ahead and set up the "initial remote site directory" to be "public_html" and so WS_FTP just puts me in it from the start. I don't have to worry about whether it is shown or not. The technicians have looked around and cannot see anything wrong. I thought that the Tag Lines showed up on Digest mode as well as List mode (individual)....but they don't seem to be. Is there a way to do this? Thanks. Virginia
Hi Is there a problem with the rootsweb.com web sites? I have the http://bostonstates.rootsweb.com site and no longer get to the public directory to be able to manage files when I ftp. I get to /home/sharonev but it is an empty directory. I can go up one directory and see other user /home listings which are also empty when I click on them. thanks for any info Sharon http;//www.GenealogyFair.com ____________________________________________________________________ Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.amexmail.com/?A=1

Since there is so much variation in how different scanners are operated and since it may be that none of us use your model scanner, I suggest that one of the Usenet news groups might be your best chance for getting the step by step procedure that you need. The Usenet is a section of the Internet currently with some 60,000 plus bulletin boards covering every conceivable subject. I suspect that one of the group prefixed "comp," for computers, would be your best bet. Post your question on one (or maybe better all) of the following news groups: comp.periphs.scanner comp.periphs.scanners and alt.comp.periphs.scan The usenet today is not as prominent as it was 7 years when I first began to use the Internet. This was before the WWW came to dominate popular usage of the Internet. Yet you almost certainly have the Newsreader you need for access. If you use Microsoft Outlook Express you can access it thru that program. I think the Netscape mail program has similar Usenet capability. Give it a try. Thanks Rich for your prompt reply. I went there and got some helpful hints. I still have the CD, but thought there was a printed manual on getting started, which I couldn't find. My problem is that there are multiple choices. What I need is a "map" of which fork in the road to take each time. That's what I meant by simple 1-2-3 directions. When the site opens it gives 4 choices, which do I take? Of course it depends on my goal, which is to scan one page of typewritten text and save it as a file. I was hoping someone could tell me and save a lot of trial and error. Thanks so much for your help. John New Orleans
Go to http://209.85.7.18/techsupport.php?p=csfb620p which is Canon's support page for your scanner. There, you will find a link for the user's guide which you can download and print -- plus installation guides, faq's, and drivers. At one point AOL had said they weren't going to bother fixing the problem with AOL 5.0 and advised everyone to upgrade to 6.0 where supposedly it would work. I still use AOL 5.0 and the FTP login now works again -- even with 5.0. Joan

I've got those too in a different line where the same child was baptized in the CofE and the Independents - once I think in two independent churches - but that seems to be different to the situation I found in the family bible. Christopher Richards
As another journalist, I would second Hamrick's comments about copyright. Most obits are supplied by the funeral home and are compiled with varying levels of assistance from the family -- and most newspapers do not have the time or inclination to go after people who copy a few of those. However, if the obit carries a reporters byline (for example, Mel Gussow of The New York Times, who wrote the Page One obit for Jason Robards this morning) or if it is credited to a wire service like the Associated Press, it is copyrighted and you would be advised to leave those alone. Rewriting or abstracting is always a good option. I got sick as hell of copyediting drab and dreaded prose such as "has gone on to his eternal resting place" or "her beloved <insert object of affection here>". And beware of guys who stood beside Harry Truman on the deck of the Missouri when Japan surrendered! First, if the obituary is, as one writer suggested, simply a form that recites the facts, it may not reach the unique creation test of copyright law and therefore would not be legally copyrighted. However, most newspapers copyright the entire newspaper. So caution should be advised. If a writer went to some lengths to tell the story of the life of someone who died, I have little doubt it could be copyrighted. A biographical sketch would get similar treatment, even though the person may or may not be dead. However, on the practical side. . .I think few newspapers would pursue a copyright infringement suit over a standard obituary. It would be rather absurd to spend the money do so without an ulterior motive such as slamming a competitor. It is true that newspapers used to reverse the letters in names, even make up sham stories, to catch radio competitors and other papers repeating their material. So my own view is that I wouldn't worry much about a copyright infringement suit from a newspaper over an obituary. It might be legal to reprint it if it were a standard recitation of facts. It might be a violation of copyright if it were an extraordinary work. Nevertheless, it is doubtful if many, or any, newspapers would sue over the repetition of an obituary. The first thing you can do to protect yourself is ask the newspaper if it is all right; you might consider getting blanket permission. If so, I'd get it in writing. There is another thing you can do to keep from getting on their wrong side: Give them credit for the obituary. Of course, this also is an admission about where you got it. There is another thing that is done that is quite common in the news media, and I may get in trouble for saying this. Change it, or rewrite it, so that it is not recognizable as the original piece, but make certain the facts are right. If they had a typo saying 1898, and meant 1998, it would identify you as the plagiarist. Please understand that I am not giving legal advice. I am not a lawyer. I am a former editor. The views are my opinion and should not be viewed as a professional opinion. Copyright law is extremely subtle and complex. The questions about whether the family likes it or not, in my mind, are not material to the issue of the facts surrounding someone's death. A death is a matter of public record. The facts of birth, children, marriages, death are all a matter of public record. Some family members don't like obituaries stated a certain way. I used to have funeral directors tell me that the second wife didn't want the first wife's name mentioned. We did not grant such requests. They could be particularly odd when children are involved. The facts are the facts. Does GenSeeker search text files as well as html files on our sites? I have added the 1860 and 1870 census to our site, but I have used SSI to include the raw text files in a HTML loader file. A search of my site today returns a hit on an introductory page that I added at the same time as these text files, but does not return a hit on any of the census text files. It would really be so helpful to our visitors if GenSeeker would find their surnames in these census files as it does the rest of our site. Do I need to change them to html files to have GenSeeker work with them? Fleta Powell Aday http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcchs/ Carroll Co. AR Research
