I finally figured it out. I've been on the computer too much lately, need a rest. Other things were starting to look small to me, so, I checked my font size and it had changed to "Smallest" Duh, Should have checked earlier, maybe I'm headed for computer problems. Sally
>http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialee > >Would someone look at it, check the source and see if the page is like the >source. > >Thanks >Sally Looks fine here. My validator shows a couple of minor errors, nothing serious. Different browsers will make your page look quite different. Netscape and IE use very different font sizing, and the layout can shift as a result. Different versions of the same browser can also render a page differently. Have you upgraded your browser recently? I can't help with First Page, since I've never used it. Regards Jim Keebaugh
Late last night after many hours on the computer, I went to my county page and it was different then it should be. All of the letters were smaller, and "main topic" were the same size. These "main topics" in the center of the page were larger and bolder. This morning I went into my HTML Editor (First Page) and they were the same there????????? I tryed to make some changes in the editor, some worked, others didn't??????? Does anyone have any idea whats going on and how to fix it. Is my computer tired? http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialee Would someone look at it, check the source and see if the page is like the source. Thanks Sally

Hello, I am the webmistress for the site http://www.rootsweb.com/~amvethm/page1.html As you may be able to tell from the site, I am relatively new to html. I was hoping I could get some advice from fellow webmasters or webmistresses on what they think of the site and also how I can let more people who would be interested in such type of site know about it. Thank you in advance. Any help would be appreciated. Very truly yours, Alycia J. See http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~keebaugh/search/index.html for hints and instructions on how to do this. You've made a good start. Your pages look good, load fast, and are easy to read. There are two ways to select messages in Netscape Communitator. I'm not sure what they call the various parts of the window, but the part I have up top, with the list of all the messages -- You can just select those, push the shift key down, and select away, and then hit the delete key. The other way to select the email is in the reading window, where again, you can just push the delete key. Once you are done perusing the day's mail, you can open up the Trash folder, and see if you deleted anything by mistake. Once you're sure it all goes, Empty Trash and it is gone forever. Hope this helps, Valorie
Sandy Redmond, I have earthlink and I use the Netscape mail program. I can delete without opening the mail by putting the form in only the right half and left half and shutting the section where you read the mail, bottom right. Also Earthlink has a spaminator whitch catches your spam and you can delete it, read it or let it be deleted by them if you don't check often enough. I have found this service OK but they some spam gets through anyway but I haven't found anything not spam in the spaminator file. Nancy
1) I just left AOL and switched to Earthlink. I have tried the Earthlink Mail Box, but all the lists I'm subscribed in digest mode only give me the header and the list of what's in the digest. There are NO actual messages. Any ideas? No - it's not an attachment - there's nothing there! 2) I have also used using Netscape Messenger to read my Earthlink mail. Some messages I don't even want to click on if they are junk - can't spammers collect info on you even when you just open it? Messenger opens it immediately - you can't just select and delete. How can I get rid of them in Messenger without clicking on them? Neither of the on-line help menus provide answers. THANKS. Sandy

Looking at your account, there are no problems. The public_html directory is still there. You have 30 files inside the public_html directory. If you aren't seeing them, the problem is on your side. Now -- I have a theory as to what is wrong. There was a bug in CuteFTP (and also in WS_FTP) which showed up on July 1, 2000. These programs were unable to interpret the time/date stamp for files created after January 1, 2000 after those files became 6 months old. So, they simply did not display the file at all. Given that the newest file in your orduvcw account is time-stamped 15 March 2000, this is most likely the cause of the problem. To fix it, download a more recent version of CuteFTP. The bug-fix was made available about 3 July as soon as it was diagnosed. >I hope I've understood your request for information. But in order to provide answers, it helps for you to be very specific about what you were trying to do, the server that you're looking at, the account, and anything else that might give a hint to the technicians to track down the problem. There are just too many servers and user accounts to be able to provide any kind of diagnosis without a good description of symptoms. Regards, Elsi

Fleta is absolutely correct on all counts--I'd only add that "yes" you DO need more information and that information can be supplied by the submitter as Fleta pointed out. Also, if the submitter does allow downloads of his GEDCOM, WorldConnect permits up to 10 generations to be downloaded (and not the full GEDCOM). The number of generations, just like the choice of allowing downloads at all, lies with the submitter. Also, with regard to your statement that if you are going to clean living information you should also remove mother's maiden names, I would add that removing mother's maiden names is not necessary if sufficient information isn't made available to identify the living children. Given names can be removed for the living showing only 'Living SMITH' for examle and listing only a year of birth and nothing else. Hardly enough information for identity theft. That said, however, the true solution to the problem is NOT to use mother's maiden names for account information for banks and credit cards. I realize they ask for that information but they have no way of knowing if the name you give them is really your mother's maiden name. Joan
All right, so I'm tired and I've got a headache that wraps around twice, but still... I used WorldConnect, and found hits on a very rare surname (Yoist, in case it matters). But then, I couldn't find any way to d/l the GEDCOMs. So, I thought, well, that's peculiar and went to another name that isn't as rare to see if that told me anything (in case the Yoist submitters were protecting their data, and BTW if he's going to strip "LIVING" people, he'd better strip mother's maiden names too). There was the mailto at the top for the submitter; there was the links to more info on each of them (but I didn't NEED more info, I recognized 'em), and there was the link to the surname lists in that GED. There was the Rootsweb disclaimer at the bottom. But be darn if I saw a Download link. So, ok, already, I give up. Can I buy a link? But then, I couldn't find any way to d/l the GEDCOMs. If the submitter of the gedcom allows it, you will be given a link to download gedcom. If there is no link to download gedcom, it is because the submitter of the data choose that download not be allowed when they set up their account. In the words of Rootsweb programers, when you place your data in World Connect "Unlike with certain other Web sites, you have full control over your GEDCOM." I would not have it any other way. On doing a Yoist surname search at World Connect I found 3 databases with this surname. One of the databases had a gedcom download option, the other two did not. You will need to contact the owner of the gedcom for further help. Fleta
Let's see if I can expound on this... I've been using the RootsWeb server and Cute FTP to upload the few websites for non-profit organizations and some counties in the USGenWeb project that I manager for about five years, give or take... On one of those sites I went to upload some updates and when I got a connection using Cute FTP there was no public_html folder. It used to be there or I couldn't have uploaded the page originally. I don't know what happened to it - it just disappeared sometime in the past seven months as it has been since June since the last update. So, to answer your questions: What I did: connected to CuteFTP to upload updates to the web site What I expected: to see the Public_html folder What happened: the Public_html folder is missing. In fact there are no files. The server is RootsWeb You were not clear as to why you need to know which account, but the account is the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865. The URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~orduvcw/index.htm I hope I've understood your request for information. I didn't mean to assume anyone was a mind reader - I was only trying to keep my initial question simple. If this is not the place to ask questions, let me know. Questions to be answered: What software are you using? Procomm Plus 32 has just that problem in the older version. I was in my directory, but no files showed on the screen. They were there. I just could not see them. I'd forgotten about this problem until I had to reload all my software a few weeks ago. There was a patch for it on the Datastorm web page as I recall. However Procomm Plus is now owned by Symantec and I just decided to upgrade instead of trying to find the patch again. When I had the problem originally it took me forever to figure it out. I don't know that anyone else here uses Procomm. You all seem to use CuteFTP or WS_FTP. Second - isn't it public_html instead of Public_html? Doesn't the case matter? I think so.
