Another example of how to do this that includes a method by which the viewer can report where they came from to get to this point can be found at http://world.std.com/~ahern/TIARA.html The value of this is that if you have an established site there can be many links out there that you do not know about. When someone sends me the url of a site that has a link to TIARA's old url, I go to that page, search for the email address of the maintainer, and email that person a canned message containg the correct url already encoded so they can easily drop it in place and have an up-to-date link. For example: Our website has moved. Please update your link at [insert url here] from <LI><A HREF="http://world.std.com/~ahern/TIARA.html"> The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA)</A> to <LI><A HREF="http://www.tiara.ie"> The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA)</A> _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Dennis Ahern | The Irish Ancestral Research Association Acton, Massachusetts | Dept. Alycia, Great job! I agree with the ease of reading a page. Simple clean lines are a sure draw for return visitors. Outstanding subject matter. Karen Dyer nchistoric@onemain.com ~~~~ Historic Cemeteries of Nevada County http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~historic/ ~~~~ Nevada County Genealogical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~cancgs/ Hello, I am the webmistress for the site http://www.rootsweb.com/~amvethm/page1.html As you may be able to tell from the site, I am relatively new to html. I was hoping I could get some advice from fellow webmasters or webmistresses on what they think of the site and also how I can let more people who would be interested in such type of site know about it. Thank you in advance. Any help would be appreciated. Very truly yours, Alycia J. Linda Crawford > Know all about the sinus infection -- had one a couple of weeks ago. Ouch! As to the link, the RootsWeb server can't find the file, and neither can I. Please check the spelling; it must be memories.htm. Memories.htm, memories.HTM, etc. will not work. Spelling and case must be exactly the same. If it works on your computer and not on the server, it's probably a case difference. If all else fails, put an ice pack on your head and try again tomorrow. This is so much easier when you are well. I have need of the proper code to automatically redirect the viewer to another URL (old county homepage to new county homepage). Can someone provide an example? Larry Flesher SC, MOGenWeb Project
I think I will go back and start all over. I have a terrible sinus and bronchial infection and should not have even attempted it, but here goes. My site is http://www.rootsweb.com/~mohickor/index.html I listed it wrong in the previous message. I have a file called Memories of Preston. I click on the link and it takes me to "The Requested URL /~mohickor/memories. htm was not found on this server". The file is on my local site and it uploaded it to the remote/public html site. At least it shows it there. I'm new at this and it is probably some little something I am doing wrong. Thank you for any help. Linda Crawford
Hi Last week I needed help setting up my guestbook and Elsi came to the rescue... Thanks again Elsi! Now I have another problem... I am unable to "sign the guestbook". (The link towards the bottom of the page.) Could someone have a look at the folllowing page http://www.rootsweb.com/~nbcampob/guestbk.htm and tell me what I need to do. I am sure it is probably something "simple" but I can't find it:( I see that this topic is on the guest book help board list but had no luck trying to follow that either...) I use Front Page Express and am not sure that the program is trying to "help" and maybe throwing in extra html that is not really needed. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! Roger, I'll have to talk with the sysadmins, but I think they've set up the Apache server with "AllowOverride None" options for user accounts/directories. If so, I think that would cause any .htacess file you created to be ignored. Some RootsWeb folks are at GenTech in Dallas this weekend -- others are exhausted from fixing the GenConnect server. But I'll ask when I get a chance. Regards, Elsi Regards, Elsi

David Samuelsen Here are the instructions for Outlook, and Outlook Express: Outlook: Quoting Megan: Highlight the message, right click, and from the menu that appears, choose "options". There will be a box in the window that pops up labelled "internet headers"; it's the content of that box that needs to be copied and pasted. Outlook Express: Quoting Derek Nichols, and Alfred Eller, other listowners: DN: When the message is open File > Properties. Then select Details. You can highlight, then copy the information using Ctrl-C (keyboard shortcut), or doing the usual Right Click and select copy. You can do the same thing with the message closed by Right Clicking on the message and then selecting Properties. And then Details again. ... AE: after you select "Details," then at the bottom of the window, select "Message Source", then hit the full screen button. (the square in the upper right corner between the "-" and the "X". The part you are looking for is in the second half of the page, after all the bold type a little way it will say "- - - - -Transcript of session follows- - - -" select from there to the end, I THINK I FINALLY GOT IT. --- Hope this helps, Valorie PS: When filtering for it, remember that it's "Snowhite", not "SnowWhite."

David- With this worm the headers won't help you much. They'll only show you the *server* the message came from. Of all the 100s of copies I've received I've only ever been able to notify ONE person that they were the source of the attachment I received. Joan
I am fairly new at html and webpages. I have a county GenWeb site and have uploaded a file but Rootsweb says the Requested URL was nor found on this server. It is on my remote/public html site though. What am I doing wrong.Thank you. Linda

not quite. Not from what I finally learned. The clue is in first line. I had a subscriber by that name and that person left. More details on what to look for can be seen at (not a porn site) http://www.sexyfun.net This site is set up to help track down the sources. Considerable information on site. Will somebody please send me instructions on how to turn on and view the headers of a message. It is needed badly in order to track down the SnowWhite sources. I know how to read using Netscape Navigators but somebody please supply me instructions for Outlook browsers so I can assist my subscribers. W. David Samuelsen
Hello again Elsi and all, Thanks to Elsi's help, I have been able to get Mailmerge to mail the oupput to me, but still can't get it to write to a file. These are not forms I will be using, but just for learning. When/if I get the basics down, then I can create others I may want to use. For my input form, I used an abbreviated version of Family Group Sheet Form at http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~pasher/fgs.htm My form is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tiptonsingeorgia/grpshform.html On my template, I tried to pattern the "ACTION= File" line after the example in the Posting to a web page template in Http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~elsi/free-mailmerge.html and the instructions directly under the template example. My template is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tiptonsingeorgia/groupsheet.txt I changed to the .txt extension because when using .tmp, about half the time when trying to view or edit it in the RootsWeb Editor, it would download to MS Works on my computer and MS Works couldn't open it. At the moment, I can't locate the reference that said it doesn't matter what extension you use for the template, but think I did read it somewhere. The oupput file is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tiptonsingeorgia/famgroup.html When I click the Submit Data Now button on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tiptonsingeorgia/grpshform.html I go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-n/mailmerge.cgi/~tiptonsingeorgi a/groupsheet.txt where the following appears: An error occurred while processing this form: /home/httpd/cgi-bin/mailmerge.cgi: Specified log file '/ul/t/i/p/t/tiptonsingeorgia/famgroup.html' does not exist. It must already be created and writable. In the remote directory of Cute FTP, it shows rw-rw-rw beside the file. I have tried writing the file with and without the </body> and </html> tags. The Basics of Mail Merge says don't use them. I believe I left them in the last change. I have read so many different instructions and tried so many different things, that my head is spinning. I believe if someone will tell me how to format the action line on the template it will, work, but of course I want to know other errors also. TIA, Russell :
