I am in the process of setting up a Mail Merge Forms page, and have gotten the dreaded "Permission denied" msg when I submit a test msg. From the Rootsweb Mail Merge site comes this explanation: <<Some Common Problems The most common problem using Mail Merge is setting your output files incorrectly. If your output file is not set to be read and writeable then your user will get a "permission denied" error message. If that happens, you will need to use your FTP client to make the file "world writable." >> Now I have just been through every single option on WS-FTP trying to figure out how to make my file "world writable" and have come up with a goose egg. My page can be seen at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/HatForm.htm Anyone know what it is I'm supposed to do?? Thanks bunches, Nel
Thanks folks, one of my sons had deleted FTP Explorer "because [he] didn't think anyone else used it" and in reconfiguring it, turns out I hadn't ticked PASV mode and had used a shortcut for the initial path which Rootsweb server only recognized with some pages. All fixed now!! Ruth Wendy Loveless wrote: > It's impossible to tell why your pages aren't uploading correctly from > viewing your site. Don, I'm no expert on any of thise, but I did speak to a Rootsweb staffer, who said that your poster "could post on a Web page which would make the db browseable, and/or also submit to User Databases and make it searchable." For more information on User Contributed Databases, see http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html Hope this helps, Valorie Donald Kear wrote: > > An individual has posted a Civil War roster on the GenConnect Pension Board, > which, of course, is not appropriate. Could someone please tell me what I'm overlooking. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fleming/records.htm The links don't work for the latest years added eg Births 1868 and 1869. I am not getting a 'transfer complete' message after uploading these files throught FTP explorer. Many thanks in anticipation. Ruth Tas

Hello All! I'm the county coordinator for the Marion County MO webpage and for several years we've had a great cgi script that creates a form where users put in a surname, location, time period, email address etc, and when they hit the submit button, it sends an email to me with the data pre-set in html text, which I cut and paste into my surname webpages. It's worked flawlessly until yesterday .... I used the windows notepad and changed my email address in the tmp file as follows: <TMP FILE STARTS BELOW> #surname page query template #account ~momarion at Rootsweb INPUT_FORM= <BODY BGCOLOR="#00ffff" TEXT="#000000" LINK="#004080" VLINK="##FF8000"> <H2><CENTER><font color=red>MARION COUNTY, MISSOURI</FONT></CENTER><br> <CENTER>SURNAME ENTRY FORM</CENTER></H2><br><BR> <P> <b>Surname in Query:</b><input type="text" name="principal" rows=1 size=30><BR><br> <b>Dates family lived in county:</b><input type="text" name="dates" rows=1 size=50><br><BR> <b>Town/township family lived in:</b><input type="text" name="town" rows=1 size=50><br><BR> <B>Your Name:</B> <INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="name" ROWS=1 size=20><BR> <B>Your E-mail Address:</B> <INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="email" ROWS=1 size=40><BR> Today's Date: <INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="today" Rows=1 size=40> <P> PLEASE NOTE: This form emails the query to me. It'll take a couple of days for me to post it. <input type="submit" value="submit surname now"> . MAIL_HEADER= to:marionmo@swbell.net from: @email@ reply-to: @email@ x-mail-agent: mailmerge v1.1 subject: MARION CO MO SURNAME . OUTPUT_FORM= <tr><td><b>@principal@</b><br></td> <td><b>@dates@</b><br></td> <td><b>@town@</b><br></td> <td><b><a href="mailto:@email@">@name@</a></b><br></td> <td>@today@</tr> . priority=normal <TMP FILE STOPS HERE> I changed nothing but the email address in the MAIL_HEADER section. Now, when someone opens the page, the text in the mail header appears at the end of the button, and submit no longer recognizes the MAIL_HEADER section. The actual page address, if you need to see it is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~momarion/surnames.htm and click on the Surname Entry Form, which will bring up the errant window. Any ideas how I screwed up something so simple? Just to make it more interesting, I have a marriage submission script on another page that is doing the same thing after an identical edit. I have no clue as to why and am completely lost. Thanks for any help you may have to offer! Scott Burow County Coordinator Marion County MO marionmo@swbell.net
THAT sounds like she maybe missed closing a tag or omitted the ?/html? tag at the end of the file. I did try in Netscape Communicator 4.6 and it printed out there without reducing the text size, but it can be reduced by clicking view and then decrease font till you get the size that will work for you. Hello, I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions regarding advertising for a website. There were some great suggestions. I believe I have a lot of work ahead of me, but as the saying goes "Anything worth having . . . " Thanks again. This is a great list. Alycia J. A drop-down box is a form element. In general, it requires a program to be executed when the form is submitted. This program can be on the server (a CGI program) or in the browser page (a JavaScript or ActiveX routine). Assuming that your server doesn't provide a CGI program for this, you'll need to add JavaScript to your page. <alert>JavaScript is a programming language. If you don't have experience with other programming languages, be prepared to spend some time learning. You might get lucky and be able to cut/paste some JavaScript into your web page and have it work correctly. You might need to learn something about the JavaScript functions being used in order to get the JavaScript working on your page.</alert> HTML Goodies has a very nice tutorial on using JavaScript to create drop-down links -- http://htmlgoodies.earthweb.com/stips/scripttip38.html Good luck, Elsi

Heather, I'm not sure if Front Page Express is being too helpful here or not. Your problem is caused by failure to close a tag -- granted, it's a long one and pretty easy to overlook. Hi, I was told that this is the place to ask questions about writing HTML codeing??!! First, I have a site at geocities.com url: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/8731 It is way to busy it doesn't have the approprate white space and the design is bad. When I first started out I used just the pagebuilder, ok but very limiting. Then I started fooling around with trying to learn HTML. that to me was a little slow to as I was still having problems figureing things out. Then I bought Office 2000 for the Front page software. Still confusion. Could someone please tell me the codeing for a drop down box that has items in it that are active links to other sites? I have found codes, I have even created a few with front page. but I have not been able to figure out where to put the name of the link and the url to make it active. If you are kind enough to answer this would you show an example that a 57 yr old computer illiterate could understand. By the way I want to put about 15 links on one drop down box. Thank you Nelda _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
