I am having problems with slow loading of my pages to my web site. I am on AOL and use WS_FTP procedures. Since the rootsweb downtime last week I find that anytime I load one of my pages out to the site it takes about a minute and a half for the load to take place. Is any one else have this problem? Gene Burleson gb4886@aol.com
Yes, I've noticed a slower load time, too. Different times of day. And it seems to take a very long time to bring up the RW directory for my site. Nel

Why is it that they will respond very fast whenever NEW postings are made - YET take LITERALLY FOREVER to respond whenever corrections or deletions (improper postings) are made??????? Overhauling the GenConnect servers didn't help a bit - only got worse. W. David Samuelsen

Front Page Extensions are Windows based codes for things like Counters, Guestbooks, etc. The RootsWeb Unix based servers do not support these Extensions. RootsWeb does offer it's own Counters and Guestbooks. You can upload to RootsWeb using the FrontPage Wizard. Hi, Teri- GenConnect has been up for the last few days but is down from time to time temporarily while we continue to work on the server. It is back up and running at this time. Joan
I used Front Page to create the "Pictures From our Past" site below. There was no major problems except as I understand it Rootsweb does not support "Front Page Extensions" Apparently this means you cannot up-load your files to Roots web with Front Page. You must use a conventional FTP program. I use WS_FTP Pro. Initially I downloaded the free WS_Ftpversion, but liked it and later upgraded to the commercial pro version. I used Front Page Express to create the home page at the Texasnet site. I am in the process of revising this with Front Page. Luc, I would really like to read the message about the missing data on the GenConnect Boards that you mentioned that's located at http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/ but I cannot get into the site - I'm getting the 502 error "cannot connect to the site" which is the same error I've gotten the 10 or 15 times I've tried to check either the Lawrence County or Mercer County, PA boards since the Rootsweb downtime. Can someone tell me about the missing data on "select" boards? Thanks, Teri << I checked the GC boards, > >To my absolute horror, the obits I posted since Jan 30 are GONE! Sometime ago I submitted my URL to HotBot. Now the word dingbat appears in the URL there: http://dingbat.rootsweb.com/~marier/Sil-Unkn.htm Naturally it doesn't go anywhere. Does this mean anything to RootsWeb? I have e-mailed HotBot to remove the URL and replace with my correct one but I'm just curious. Marie Robinson

Basically, some of the data was on a hard drive that failed. They are working at getting the data back from the backups, but this will take some time. Regards Jim Keebaugh
Hello again, Regretfully, I wrote an answer to your first posting without reading your second posting. If you are using a DSL connection plus an Ethernet card that suggests to me that you are either operating or working toward having a local area network. If that is true then a whole new set of issues are introduced. First, you need to be using an operating system that is capable of performing Internet routing and, unless your DSL provider is giving you multiple static IP addresses, you will also need to be running Network Address Translation (NAT) software to prevent your private IP network addressing space from crossing the NAT server. Personally, for security reasons I would prefer that my ISP not furnish either static or multiple IP addresses so that I can make the machines behind my network front-end non-routable from the Internet. If, based on your message header information and your statement about the age of the computer, you are running Windows 98 then you are probably better off buying Windows 2000 (assuming you like Microsoft products--I don't) or you might also consider Windows NT. You need a server rather than end user level operating system to front-end a network. Since I don't trust Microsoft software to protect my data from Internet compromise I front-end my own network with BSD UNIX. It handles the NAT, XNTPD (time synchronization), and supports a software based firewall filter for my network. Who installed the DSL connection? Hi, I agree with Linda's advice about checking the battery. I also notice that you are an America Online user. I'm not an AOL user but when I last helped a person get setup with AOL software they had 2 connection options (1) AOL proprietary (2) PPP - the Internet standard for dial-up connections. If you are using PPP then you can acquire software that will automatically set your clock to the correct time (within a few hundred milliseconds or so depending on your system platform) via Internet time servers. Visit a shareware site like "tucows.erols.com" and look under clocking software. Some packages are freeware, others are shareware. Pick what you like and install it. Your computer will always have the correct time if you use the software to automatically set the clock every few minutes. There are technical names for the mechanisms that do this so if you are very technically inclined I can provide more precise terminology and descriptions for you. I just wanted to thank all those listers that sent me replies to my problem. It seems to be the consensus that it may be the battery. So--I will check into how easy it is to replace.... I am not sure if this problem came because of installing a DSL modem and ethernet card on my computer (a month ago) or not. But it sure seems as if I have had (coincidentally?) so many problems since doing that to my computer. It is only two years old. I use AOL and it has continuously 'bumped' me off before finishing loading when I sign on, and I am not sure that is because of the DSL ! But also my printer gave out and I installed a new one plus a new scanner (was on sale!), then Photo Suite 4.0---all last weekend. I really don't think all that did anything to the computer, but ...I am not a hardware person. Thanks again! Maggee Smith
Mine did the same and finally just went back to the factory setting. I found I needed to replace the small battery on the mother board (looks like a watch battery only slightly larger). This is now something that has to be done about every 3 months or so <huge sigh>. You might want to check that first. Dianne, >Is it possible to put web pages at rootsweb that have been created in >Front Page 2000?? Yes, it is possible to have all versions of FP created web pages on RootsWeb. All my sites and pages were created in FP98. However, some of the FP components will not work on RootsWeb - like counter, forms, guest book, etc.... For things like that you need to use those supplied by RootsWeb. Another thing about FP, it is hard to FTP directly from FP to a website like RootsWeb though many do. Most use a stand-alone FTP client/program like CuteFTP. Once done with a page(s) in FP, you would publish to a specific folder you have created on your hard drive and then up-load the contains of that folder to your RootsWeb site. Sounds complicated but is really a no-brainer after the first time. Also I believe ????? when I installed FP on my computer, I selected not to have FP extensions not installed. I can't remember for it was a good 3 years ago. I don't thing they are necessary. --- Susan SGTAYLOR1@att.net My Genealogy Website - sgt http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/ ----------------------------------------------- USGW Coordinator Plymouth Co., MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ USGW Plymouth, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ USGW Mansfield, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/mansfield.html USGW New London, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/newlondon.html USGW Norwich, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/norwich.html USGW Windham, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/windham.html *********************************************************

Typically they last about 3 years. If your computer is about that age, that may be the case. You should have a system board manual that came with your computer. There should be instructions in the manual telling you how to replace the battery. Bob
Hi, folks if this was posted recently, forgive me--I did try the archives but they seem to be still down-- My question Is it possible to put web pages at rootsweb that have been created in Front Page 2000?? or is FPE the only version that will work?? About a month ago someone asked why she couldn't copy/paste html into an existing webpage. She continually got a "Not enough memory" msg or something similar. I believe she was using FPE, as am I. I have also had this problem, but not all the time. I have since discovered something that explains when I can and when I can't paste code into a page. If, when I view my source, it comes up as a Wordpad file, I can paste anything. But if it comes up as a Notepad file, I often can't paste into it. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe Notepad has a limit of 30K. If my page size is over 30K, I'm out of luck. If my page is under 30K, I can paste only up to 30K, and then I've got a problem. What I haven't figured out yet is why some of my pages have been saved in Wordpad, while others are saved in Notepad. My normal routine has been to open my page and then View/Source. But if I do a File/Open with Wordpad, I have no problem. Cheers, Nel Thanks, Nel
