I would advise trying to upload it again and paying attention to any error messages. Also, be sure to wait for the confirmation screen showing that your file was successfully uploaded. Joan

    3. Jean, when you open your file IN World Connect, do you find everything as it should be? If not, you probably need to re-upload. If all your data WAS there, you should immediately be able to download your gedcom to your new computer. Valorie Jean wrote: > > I uploaded my Gedcom this evening to World Connect. 3. I uploaded my Gedcom this evening to World Connect. I then tried to retrieve it but the Gedcom I received wouldn't open and there doesn't seem to be any data in it. This wouldn't ordinarily be a big problem but I have just purchased a new computer and due to several problems, I have been unable to transfer by PAF data from my old to my new computer. I remembered that I had read that having your data on WorldConnect could help in just this type of situation I decided to try it. I don't know if I have done something wrong or if I just need to be patient. Any suggestions? Jean

    3. I would NOT use Word files at all. You have to remember that there are many visitors who do NOT accept MSWord, including me. It will come up very bad scrambled. It is best to have them in .txt format that can be viewed by many. And as for Acrobat Reader - please do it properly. I know of one site that claims but really skewed the configuration. That site's coordinator is known to me and she had been informed of the fact. There is one site you can visit to find out how the Acrobat Reader was done properly. Rolf Freytag is nice guy and can give you some tidbits of help on how to do right way. http://www.rolf-freytag.de/ Leslie & James Harnish wrote: > > I did a quick look but couldn't find if I we are able to use Acrobat > (pdf) files and/or Word files on our Rootsweb pages. 1. Guestbook limit?
    2. Kathleen Larson
    3. This may have slipped by me, but I looked and couldn't find any mention of a limit to the number of entries in a RootsWeb guestbook. I know for another (non-RootsWeb) guestbook there was a limit of 200 entries. I'm not near that number yet (hope, hope), but should I have a plan in mind for somehow archiving "old" guestbook entries when I get near a certain number? Thanks, Kathleen (Kathy) Larson, Webmaster Sullivan County Historical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~inschs/

    2. Sandy Redmond
    3. Thanks for the input on slow FTP. Last night, WITHOUT changing any of my own settings, things loaded MUCH more quickly, like they did prior to the Rootsweb outage. I went ahead and left the "passive" selected because I wanted to see how it would perform. Much better - I think it was a Rootsweb issue. Whatever the reason, I'm glad to have it back to normal! 3. If you have been having FTP problems, you might want to check your settings before blaming rootsweb for your problems. Just checked mine and sure enouch, Passive Transfer was checked and Force Lower Case filenames on remote server had been unchecked. Not the way I had it set up originally. Don't know if it was responsible this time, but Windows 98 has a frustrating habit of eating files and changing settings on my computer because it thinks it knows better than I what they should be. I still curse the day I installed it. Norma Jennings.

    2. richard branch
    3. I checked the ROOTS-L Michigan History page that includes links for county histories. In many cases, including Kalamazoo, the link was to a multimag site and not my MIGEN history pages. I emailed the pagekeeper and she has added my site. It appears a few coordinators have done the same. The ROOTS-L site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/USA/mi/history.html if you wish to check your county's link. Dick Branch

I'm sure that the site (on a virtual domain) I update has moved to a new server. The FTP is now OK, but we do have still problems with slow HTTP, when the page is larger then about 30 to 50k (images included). The RW helpdesk is now investigating this problem. So I wait. My Remote Directory popped up instantly. > > > >I'm not sure why I started having slow loads, since I've not made any > >changes to my FTP options since I first began using it a few years > >ago. But the suggested solution appears to solve the problem. Here's a bit of an explanation. In Passive Transfers (also referred to as PASV), all connections are originated from the FTP client to the FTP server. Normal FTP has the "control" channel originating from the FTP client to the FTP server and the "data" channels originating from the FTP server to the FTP client. So, Normal FTP is like you calling your neighbor on his listed phone number and then giving him the phone number of your second line and asking him to call you back. PASV mode is more like making 2 telephone calls to your neighbor, with you dialing both of his phone numbers. For a while, the servers at RootsWeb had a problem with PASV in that when the FTP client asked the server which address to use for the second call (i.e. the data channel), the FTP server gave an invalid address. The client dutifully tried to connect to that address and waited for the normal timeout. Once it timed out, the client then issued a PORT command to tell the server how to call back to the client and, assuming that you weren't behind a firewall, the file transfer then went through. If you were behind a firewall, you then got some kind of an error (blocking call cancelled or some such), and then lost the connection to the FTP server. Fortunately, the guys at RootsWeb have fixed the problem. I've tested 3 of the servers and PASV mode is working just fine -- which is important for me since I'm behind a big firewall. Regards, Elsi

    3. I was curious to know more about "Passive Transfer Mode", so looked up "FTP" in www.whatis.com, and found this about "Passive FTP". I assume that this is the same as Passive Transfer Mode, but will do some more looking - fyi: "Passive FTP (sometimes referred to as PASV FTP because it involves the FTP PASV command) is a more secure form of data transfer in which the flow of data is set up and initiated by the File Transfer Program (FTP) client rather than by the FTP server program. Separate FTP client programs, such as WS_FTP Pro, usually allow the user to select passive FTP. Most Web browsers (which act as FTP clients) use passive FTP by default because corporations prefer it as a safety measure..." 1. Fixing FTP
    2. Robert Sullivan
    3. A couple of years ago something changed on the ISP I was then using for my site. FTP (using WS_FTP) became excruciatingly slow, and the connection would drop frequently. This didn't happen with some other ISPs I used. Then someone suggested what someone else already posted here: turn off "Passive File Transfers" - just uncheck the box under the Advanced tab. I don't know if this is the cause of all your problems, but some of the symptoms sound familiar. Hope this helps. 3. I just went to WS-FTP and did what was suggested - unchecked Passive Transfer. My Remote Directory popped up instantly. I'm not sure why I started having slow loads, since I've not made any changes to my FTP options since I first began using it a few years ago. But the suggested solution appears to solve the problem. Cheers, Nel

Why are there series of pauses? 5 files uploaded then pause (in doing so, erasing the log record) then resume repeatedly few times? I didn't stop the process of ftping at all. David Samuelsen

    3. Hello, I'm new to this and am thinking about adopting a county site. The other person sent me the username and password, so I could see how she has it set up. My problem is I can't figure out where to go to type in the username and password. The other lady works 6 days a week, evening shift, so she's not able to help me. Could someone please tell me how to get to the sign in page?
