Hello. Does anyone know how long it will be before the RootsWeb mailing list ARCHIVES can be browsed??? Every time I try to browse the archives of a list, I get the same message: "Check back soon! We are currently in the middle of planned downtime, etc, etc." This has been happening for days. How long will it last? Thanks! John C. Carter spiff@atlantic.net
Anybody know IF this list has a listowner? I have asked to be contacted several times, and also wrote to RootsWeb-Help-admin@rootsweb.com and have not heard from the listowner. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Sandy

Here is how to setup CuteFTP on the site settings screen for your RootsWeb site: Label for site: I use the name of my site like, Plymouth town or Plymouth County for I have both. Use whatever name/label you want. FTP Host Address: users.rootsweb.com FTP site user name: the name given you by Rootsweb FTP site Password: password you set up with Rootsweb FTP site connection port: 21 with the above filled and the site name highlighted click the "Edit" button under it: Host Type: Auto-Detect Default Remote Directory: public_html Default Local Directory: Hit the browser button the find the folder on your own computer where the files are located for uploading There now it is all set up. It will automatically access your "public_html" folder on RootsWeb showing your site in the right hand column of CuteFTP and showing the Folder/files of what you want to upload in the left hand column of CuteFTP. Nan: I just looked and your nycalexa account *does* have a public_html directory. So - let's see if we can figure out why you can't see it. 1) In your FTP set up, how is your Cute FTP configuration set up? You want to make sure that you haven't told Cute FTP to go ahead and place you inside the public_html directory. If it did so, then you wouldn't see it. By the way, the nycalexa account is set up almost identically to the nyjeffer account. If you are successfully using Cute FTP to access the nyjeffer account, just copy your configuration over and change the account & password. 2) How long have you had Cute FTP installed? If your copy is not a recent one, we'd recommend that you update it. Old levels of Cute FTP have problems with file dates in 2000 and 2001, making those files invisible to the Cute FTP program. Do Rootsweb's servers support ASP? No. Active Server Pages are specific to Microsoft operating systems (i.e. Windows in all its forms) and the web servers provided by Microsoft. RootsWeb servers run unix operating systems. In addition, ASPs constitute a form of "server side" processing and as such would not be permitted on RootsWeb servers, even if they were capable of supporting them. Regards, Elsi
I've organized some data on a branch of my family and would like to make this info available to those who visit my site by using Active Server Pages. Do Rootsweb's servers support ASP?
Hello Wendy, Thanks for the index tip. As for the page loss, The page I lost was my research page, (toppage 2, ) and, now, the only way I can upload is to manually transfer the page over from one side of my ftp system viewer, to the other, whereas before my wysiwyg editor was automatic.I have since acquired the page, but it's still more of a hassle than before. Any suggestions? Barry H. Camrose County GenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~abcamros/

Evidently your upload didn't work. Rootsweb was down part of yesterday, I believe . . maybe just try again? Incidentally, you might want to rename your default file to index.html so that you can just have your users go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~abcamros/ without adding the named page. That would keep people like me from looking at your directory structure, too. :-) Wendy

Hello Group, After making a minor change on my site, on my largest and most important page on my site, THE PAGE DISAPEARRED , after uploading the change. What's happening here? I'm new at FTP. This is my first time trying to upload. I can't find public_html on my screen. My letter from Betsy at Accounts said "when you look in your directory, you'll see a subdirectory called "public_html. Cannot find the subdirectory, and have spent all day at this, including two calls to CuteFTP help line. They said it was not their problem, and to find the directory path to the remote directory...and to me, that's ALL Greek. Also a letter to RootsWeb Help, which evidently went to the same place public_html is lurking...have not had an answer. Can't find the site, either: users.rootsweb.com/~nycalexa Help? We've maintained NYJeffCo GenWebSite for years, but never had to open a site. We're stumped. Nan Dixon

According to Netwhistle, and confirmed by my own attempt, RootsWeb is down. Susan "S. W. I tried to open our Bixby Historical Society web page this morning and got 'page not found.' I then went to my WS_FTP Pro and connected. There was no information at our site, just an empty public.html file! I disconnected and tried again. This time the message showed 'connection refused.' A third time showed a message, 'blocking operation in progress.' The page worked fine, yesterday and I haven't done anything differently from the past. My only concern is to upload to a file named african_american on the server. I created the african_american file in front page, and now trying to upload to the server. I'm not clear whether 'african_american' is a directory or a file name. If it is a file named african_american.html, just publish to the address above. To upload to a directory named african_american, publish to: ftp://users.rootsweb.com/public_html/african_american If you already have a page named african_american.html, uploading a new version to the same location will overwrite and replace the existing file. A bit off topic--anyone know how I can type the pound symbol in Word 2000 (L with a little squiggly or hyphen through it)? In an older version, the ASCI way was NUM LOCK on, ALT + 0 + 164. Doesn't work and I can't find it in various symbol files. Thanks, Marie.
you mean British pound sign? alt + 0163 £ not 0164 (¤) David Marie A Robinson wrote: > > A bit off topic--anyone know how I can type the pound symbol in Word 2000 (L > with a little squiggly or hyphen through it)? My name is Sonya Brown, assistant coordinator for Bladen Co. NC, african american. genealogy. site. My problem is that I am having problems publishing with FrontPage 2000. When it asks for username and password, I type in the info requested. When I try to publish, the directory path, that I try to publish to is ftp://users.rootsweb.com/public_html/ncbladen However, I dont want to delete whats on the main page. My only concern is to upload to a file named african_american on the server. I created the african_american file in front page, and now trying to upload to the server. Here are some of the ftp addresses that I use. ftp://users.rootsweb.com/ncbladen/public_html/african_american ftp://users.rootsweb.com/public_html/ncbladen/african_american None of these ftps seem to work. Can you tell me what I appear to be doing wrong. I would appreciate any help you can give.
