    2. W. David Samuelsen
    3. I have a major problem with Textpad. I did all that should be - Courier 10 (font) margins were specified saved file to ASCII text When I opened Textpad, all the margins were busted. I can't find any button that will open up to show margins in order to reset to where the margins should have been. I need to do this before I can send to the USGenWeb Archives

    3. Hello. Not sure if my previous message was missed, or if it's just that no one knows the answer. I did not receive any responses. Doesn't anyone know how long the Archives will be down?? Neither one of the following links will produce a site for viewing the Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/SALYER-L/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/TNSCOTT-L/ Prior to yesterday, if you following the links to the Browse Archives page for each site, it would display a message stating, "Check back soon! We are currently in the middle of planned downtime, etc, etc." Now, it doesn't even show that anymore; just goes to a non-found page default. Thanks in advance for any information. You need to move them within the public_html directory and they will then be visible to the browser. Regards, Elsi

    3. HI, Something really strange in going on with my zip drive. I have been using it to compile a new publication that requires me to combine different variables from different files into a master file. I start with one file that has a number of variables I want, rename the file, then delete the variables I don't want and add others I do want. All was going well, when all of the sudden it refused to allow me to rename a file. I got a message, "access denied, you do not have the right to do this." I had been doing it for several days with no such message. Then I started trying to use Norton to see if I could find the problem. Norton Utilities refused to access drive B and gave me the message, "unable to access drive B. The drive is locked by a disk utility. Scan again later when disk is not longer locked." Do you have any clue what this means and how to fix it?

    3. I just noticed something quite odd when updating my website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~vnfa I first updated on 7 Mar 2001 and thought things were normal, until I visited the site tonight and saw that my pages were still showing the older (Oct 2000) version of the site. So I uploaded the pages again (FTP showed that the files in question were updated as I thought on 7 Mar 2001 but the byte sizes were the same as the older 2000 files). Cleared the cache on my browser, and visited the site again. Same thing. Older pages, older byte size. I repeated this process several times, even deleting all the files in my Rootsweb directory and uploading "fresh" files. No change. To give an example of old vs. new: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~vnfa/publications.html The old page showed newsletter information up to Feb 2000. The new page shows newsletter information up to 2001. When I view the page online (after clearing cache and refreshing) I see only the old (2000) page.

    1. Re: Cute FTP
    2. Mike & Ronica Hall
    3. Last week I had a problem with my ISP which hosts a Website for me - my public folder had become invisible. Uploading to my Rootsweb site was OK so I reasonably assumed that CuteFTP was working. My ISP's Helpdesk said my public folder was visible - and that it had exactly the same permissions as all their other public folders. Eventually he created a fresh directory which I could both see and upload files to - but the public directory was still invisible. In the end he zipped up my Website files, deleted the public directory, made another (temporary) directory, which he was going to point to my public directory on their server, and a fresh public directory. Then he unzipped my Website and placed copies in both of them. At that point I could see both of the new made directories and upload files to them, no problem. He admitted that the problem was their end, and that he had never encountered the condition before and could offer no explanation. My copy of CuteFTP32 is 1.4 Final Beta 2. Can't find the site, > either: users.rootsweb.com/~nycalexa > > Help? We've maintained NYJeffCo GenWebSite for years, but never had > to open a site. We're stumped. Nan: I just looked and your nycalexa account *does* have a public_html directory. So - let's see if we can figure out why you can't see it. 1) In your FTP set up, how is your Cute FTP configuration set up? You want to make sure that you haven't told Cute FTP to go ahead and place you inside the public_html directory. If it did so, then you wouldn't see it. By the way, the nycalexa account is set up almost identically to the nyjeffer account. If you are successfully using Cute FTP to access the nyjeffer account, just copy your configuration over and change the account & password. 2) How long have you had Cute FTP installed? If your copy is not a recent one, we'd recommend that you update it. Old levels of Cute FTP have problems with file dates in 2000 and 2001, making those files invisible to the Cute FTP program. Internally, all unix servers run on GMT. Randy just reset the FTP server on FreePages so that it would report the timestamp in MST (GMT -7). It had been reporting GMT and was the only FTP/web server which was doing it that way, so he set it to be the same as the other servers. If it was another server, I can't come up with a better explanation. If it happens again, it would be interesting to try and look at things as close to the time it happens as we can. Sorry that there's not a definitive answer. Regards, Elsi

It all has to do with time zones. The FTP server on RootsWeb's machines report timestamps in Mountain Standard Time (USA). If you're east of there timewise (including Europe and even Australia), then there's no problem. If you're west of there (California, Alaska, Hawaii, and all Pacific locations up to the International Date Line), then your file might appear to be newer than the one on the RootsWeb server. In WS_FTP, you can set a "timezone offset" in your connection profile in WS_FTP that should prevent this problem. Regards, Elsi

    3. I don't see time zones being the problem. I live in SD (Mountain time), have been here 10 yrs, haven't made any clock adjustments to my computer or any changes at all to WS-FTP options. I found the file with a 3/12 upload date at about 3 pm on 3/11, so we have a 9+ hr jump in the time. Might make sense if I lived in Bangkok, but I don't :-) This is also something that has just started happening in the last week or two. Love these little gremlins running loose <VBG> Nel

    2. Susan Taylor
    3. Mike, There has been some problems with old versions of CuteFTP on seeing files and folders. Earlier this year I had problems seeing some files and folders on all 3 of my websites - 2 on RootsWeb and 1 on AT&T. I upgraded to the newest version of CuteFTP 4.2.2 and immediately saw all files and folders. I had no problem getting to public_html. The problem that person had with not seeing, getting to, "public_html" I believe was because she didn't have it setup in the remote location of her settings and she didn't know how to navigate to find it on-line for she readily admitted she was new to all this. Hopefully she has worked it out for haven't seen any more messages/replies from her. --- Susan SGTAYLOR1@att.net My Genealogy Website - sgt http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/ ----------------------------------------------- USGW Mansfield, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/mansfield.html USGW New London, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/newlondon.html USGW Norwich, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/norwich.html USGW Windham, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/windham.html USGW Coordinator Plymouth Co., MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ USGW Plymouth, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ ********************************************************* At 01:31 PM 3/12/01 +0000, you wrote: >Last week I had a problem with my ISP which hosts a Website for me - >my public folder had become invisible. 1. Re: Listowner
    2. Sandy Redmond
    3. Betsy - At last! Someone who responded!! Here is a message I've asked several times on the list. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put the "RWHelp" prepend in the subject line of this list. I get SO much junk mail, even though I use Spaminator (an Earthlink anti-spam tool) and I've got a zillion junk filters set up. I'm discriminating about what I open if I don't think the subject line looks like it's from the Help list. Also, with the prepend it's so easy to sort by subject and send to folders. Unless the list strongly objects, would you please do this? Thanks, Sandy Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 08:12:19 -0500 From: Sandy Redmond <slredmond@earthlink.net> To: RootsWeb-Help-admin@rootsweb.com I would LOVE to see the prepend "RWHelp" (or something similar) on the subject lines for this list. I get such a tremendous amount of junk mail (yes, I know all about mail filters!) that it would help greatly. Additionally, with a prepend it's so much easier to sort messages by subject. I've written a few times in the past regarding this, and never even received a reply. Even if you disagree with my request, would you at least respond to this message? Thanks, Sandy Betsy Mills wrote: > Hi Sandy! > > I may be able to help even if I'm not the official listowner. 1. Another problem with WS-FTP
    2. Nel Hatcher
    3. Since our Rootsweb downtime, I've suddenly started seeing another minor problem with WS-FTP or ??? I will often upload a new page during the day and then later in the day I will upload it again, having made corrections to it. It is on this 2nd upload that I will receive the msg that "a newer version exists" and "do I want to continue?" Yesterday (3/11) I looked at the date of the page I had uploaded earlier in the morning. The date was 3/12!!! So, of course, since it was still 3/11, it was telling me that I was about to upload an "older" version. In other instances, the 1st date will still be the same date, but the time is anywhere from 4-10 hrs later than the time I actually uploaded it, and causing the same caution msg. Any ideas why this is happening? Nel
