See: <http://rootsweb.com/~flbgs/Newsletters/Vol13-2.htm> I think the problem is the path to the resource file. I will change anything that it is necessary to change. I can make a second resource file within "bgsnews" or I can change the path for all the images or I can do both. But I'm just not sure which will work. >greenhouse@cfl.rr.com wrote: > > The unlinked page has been found at > > http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~greenhow/bgsnews/ and it links to the > > newsletter at > http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~greenhow/bgsnews/vol14-1.html . > > > > Now I have more dumb questions. Hi, First let me thank you all for you time and help. The unlinked page has been found at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~greenhow/bgsnews/ and it links to the newsletter at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~greenhow/bgsnews/vol14-1.html . Now I have more dumb questions. Shouldn't there be an "index.html" after the ../bgsnews/ on the first page? I loaded it as an index file. None of the links to the resource file are working (I lost all my pretty pictures). Is this because I did not link /bgsnews/ to ~greenhow? When I started a few days ago I was using a separate resource file for /bgsnews/, but since there were a few duplicate images, I *thought* I could get away with only one resource file under ~greenhow -- so I combined the two. If the link from <IMG SRC> to "Resources" is incorrect, I am at a total loss on what needs to be changed. I truly appreciate your help. I really am making progress, not just in loading, but in understanding... Rel@ively, Patrice
it wasn't that. It was the file name that was not entered correctly. It has to be "bgsnews_vol14.html" - NOT "bgsnews vol14.html" Rootsweb as well as millions of other ISPs use UNIX format that does not recognize splitted file name. Just make a new directory my site/newsletterl/nameofnewletter.html or pdf, etc. When the link is made is would be made to first and 2nd director levels I. E. , if I were using the Paulding Genweb site - I would use http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/newsletter/nameofnewsletter In WS FTP I would open my public folder and create a folder newsletter and place by nameofnewsletter.html file into this new folder inside my public folder. >> \ >> family#2 etc... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gloria Bronte Lane" <gblane@aristotle.net> To: <RootsWeb-Help-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2001 11:27 AM Subject: Fwd: Re: [RW-Help] How do I load without linking... >Hmmmm - my take on it is just create a new subdirectory (folder) and >put it there. Hi, I want to load the newsletter from our local genealogical society to my personal website/directory at rootsweb. Don't worry, I am not violating copyright -- I am the editor and have all the permissions. Our webmaster will then just link to those pages on my site (he travels much of the year and e-mailing pages via cell phone is a problem). I think this will be the best solution for us. I don't want to load to the site he created -- I don't want to be responsible for messing it up. Is there any way to upload the page, but not actually link it to my own family pages, yet have it available for the society to link to? For example, right now I have: my site/familygeneral/family#1 \ family#2 etc... Where in this mess do I add a new directory? Would it be a directory, or just a file? How do I make a new directory or file using WS_FTP? I'd like to have something like: my site/familygeneral/family#1 \ family#2 etc... newsletter (not linked to my site at all) Is this possible? All help is appreciated. Rel@ively, Patrice P.S. If you are interested you can see last years newsletters at http://rootsweb.com/~flbgs/NwsLtrs.htm .
Yeah, cuz when I create a page at my site and upload it, the only way to access it is through a link. Mine or someone elses doesn't matter. So you don't need to link to it from your site. He could just link to it from his, couldn't he? I'd give that a try. Christen
Why couldn't you just create a page on your site for everyone to link to? Put only the newsletter on that page? am I missing something...hope not! If you can open them (and I did in internet explorer) just go to FILE SAVE AS... onto your harddrive then open them back up in net fusion or what ever you are using. The lastest Internet Explorer will actually save the jpg and gif images into a folder along with the file and I believe it saves into an image folder. Brenda ----- Original Message ----- From: "W. Four of you got my page up on rootsweb. Here is the recipe I ultimately successfully followed. All the clicks are left clicks. 1. In FrontPage open the web you want to publish. 2. Check all your folder and file (page) names. You want none to have spaces in the name. Underscores _ are ok. FrontPage can handle spaces in names, some browsers can handle them, but some cannot, so they are unacceptible. Either delete the spaces or replace them with underscores. 3. Click on "File" on the main toolbar. 4. Click on "Publish Web". 5. Fill in "the location to publish your web to". Replace what is in the text box with "ftp//accounttype.rootsweb.com/public_html" where "accounttype" is the type of rootsweb account your site is. Mine is "homepages", some are "users", there may be other types ... 6. Click on "options". 7. You can check whether you want to upload only changed pages or replace the whole site with new pages. You also can choose to upload subwebs. I don't know what that is so I ignored it. 8. Click "Publish". At some point, probably between 7. and 8. it will first ask for something like your name. It wants the name of your account. Then it will ask for your ID. That is the ID rootsweb gave you for use with your site. Be careful. You can't see what you enter and it is VERY case sensitive. At that point my new revised web site uploaded smooth as silk. Simple once you know how. Dick Kraus, April 2001.
I created http://www.rootsweb.com/~arbcgs/boone__county_genealogical_soc.html this site for our local genealogical society using Net Objects Fusion. My husband accidently deleted my files from the program and I have been unable to access the site to update for the past few months! We looked all thru our "trash" and deleted folders but it has just disappeared. I don't know what else to do. I have tried importing the site to Net Objects Fusion program with no results. Am I going to have to start all over and rebuild the site again in Net Objects? At this point, that seems the only logical thing to do, just redo the whole thing in order to have a copy to update. Can't you just copy back each page to your computer, and then open it again in NOF to update? I'm not understanding why you would need to do any "importing." Valorie
Hi, Thank you all! It was so much easier than I expected. I made a directory within C:\web for each of my sites. I copied the first website from RootsWeb to "C:\web\mysite1" with WS_FTP. Then I closed WS_FTP and opened PageMill. From the top menu, I selected Site > New. When the "New Site" Box appeared I entered: Name: mysite Location: C:\web\mysite1 I then clicked "Create" AND IT DID! I repeated this process for each site. You are all so wonderful. I really appreciate all the help. Rel@ively, Patrice
Okay, here goes, I use PageMill and teach "some" web building classes with it at our local Genealogical Society. I'm not a pro by any means, but can help with this one!!! Simply highlight the information on the remote side of WS-FTP that you want to reload onto your new computer. On the "new computer side" which on mine is the left side, you have the particular folder already "opened" even if it doesn't have anything in it. then start downloading it onto your computer. Then when you want to do something to it. simply open PageMill and then go to that particular folder and start working!!! It's as easy as that!!! You can email me privately and I will be happy to respond to any other questions you may have. I said I'd respond, I didn't say I would always be right <G>! -- B.
