That is another point beside what I just replied to the same comment. David Valorie Zimmerman wrote: > > You're missing the point. yes! (the buzz word is "exe") and embedded music should be voluntary, not the BIG "in your face" message asking me to allow or not allow. My Netscape always carry the warning notice about the viruses that can come with the mplayer.exe David KMTKrause@aol.com wrote: > > Are you saying any embedded music can carry a virus? Has anyone been able to upload any pages to Rootsweb this weekend? I have been trying to change a page, because it has my old email address on it--but the message says it cannot connect to 'ftp.users.rootsweb.com"--connection failed. Maggee Smith

Help.....I've got my page done but when I upload it, it leaves out the graphics I've inserted! Vonnie - Thank You!
Are you saying any embedded music can carry a virus? It's not that people are "forced" to listen to the music. They can turn off their sound. You're missing the point. Of course anyone can turn down or off the sound, but if you don't offer people the choice of whether or not to listen to the music, people with old computers and old browsers will have to forgo using your site. Music takes time and bandwidth to download, whether or not it is listened to. Valorie KMTKrause@aol.com wrote: > > Are you saying any embedded music can carry a virus? Index.html is a different file name and is *NOT* recognized as a default page. There's an old RWR which explains how all this works: http://search-rwr.rootsweb.com/rwr/issue/19990203.txt -- and find the article entitled "Getting More for Less". Regards, Elsi

You can have a free web site at RootsWeb, but it *will* be hosted at www.rootsweb.com/~xxxxxxx -- where xxxxxxx is the account name assigned to your society. You can keep your own domain name, but you will need to host the domain on some other server. You can probably get a very low cost hosting arrangement based on the fact that you'll only have 1 page located on that server. In your 'index.html' page on your hosted domain, just use a redirection to your space on RootsWeb. This way, people who link to your web site using your domain name won't have to change their links. New links can be established using the RootsWeb URL. RootsWeb is very generous to offer free, unlimited web space. It's only fair to let them get a little bit of credit by having their domain name show up in the URLs. Regards, Elsi
Hi! How do I configure a webpage without an html extension? What I'm asking is I have seen other sites that end in say ~nyallega and it brings right up a page. I want to make it so for my page when you type in http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyahs the home page comes right up. I just don't know what to name the page when I upload it. Thanks! Just make your main page named index.html and that will allow it to automagically come up with a ~nyahs/ URL 8*) > Hi! How do I configure a webpage without an html extension? index.htm or index.html depending on your software you are using to make web pages. This is the default name. If you type http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyahs/Index.html and you will get it. What I do NOT understand is the insistence of some people to force on visitors the music (mplayer.exe). What I have learned - NEVER trust it! trojan viruses are known to be able to travel in this manner. There are some sites that make it an option, giving the visitors a choice of clicking it or not instead of being forced to accept or cancel every time. David KMTKrause@aol.com wrote: > > Hi! I have been having exactly the same problem that Norma describes. I have sent queries to the help desk, as suggested by Joan, and received a form reply that just sends me off on the same circle over and over again. Finally I got a note with a tel number to call--but I don't feel comfortable calling during my working hours, and the hours that I am available for genealogy work don't fit with their hours. It surely is enough to drive a person slowly nuts! >Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 16:31:52 -0500 >From: "Norma F. I am Vice President of an historical society that needs to find a new Internet service provider for our web page. I had proposed we look into getting one on rootsweb, but the problem is we already have an established identity with our own domain name. Omeda and Joan: There is definitely a problem with accessing Ancestry.com other than just the World Tree. I tried repeatedly to sign on last night and to renew my subscription. It kept telling me that the username I wanted had already been used. It was of course, my own username I have used for years on there. When I then asked for help with my password, they gave me four different connections and usernames that I have used in the past and told me to change my password and it would take me to where I could resubscribe.. All four links were legitimate but no longer active. BUT the links all took me to the page where you had to reenter your username instead of the page to renew my subscription. Around and around we went until I finally gave up and decided I really didn't need to renew or use Ancestry this week. It isn't like I was a newbie to the site as I have used it extensively in the past few years. It was just plain impossible to access anything on there last night. Norma Jennings
Thanks for the info - I hadn't heard of that type of virus. I looked up PIF file, after a friend said it referred to some old Windows 3.1 program files, and according to Webopedia.com, it is: Last modified: January 18, 1997 "Short for Program InFormation file, a type of file that holds information about how Windows should run a non-Windows application. For example, a PIF file can contain instructions for executing a DOS application in the Windows environment. These instructions can include the amount of memory to use, the path to the executable file, and what type of window to use. PIF files have a .pif extension . "ck AVI is short for Audio Video Interleave, the file format for Microsoft's Video for Windows standard. FYI - Gloria >anything with me_nude is part of a particularly nasty virus (My office got >it). anything with me_nude is part of a particularly nasty virus (My office got it). The name of the file attachment varies depending on the day of the month it is sent. You can read more about it by going to www.f-secure.com which has a complete virus description. One of the characteristics of this virus is that it looks around on your system to see if you have a virus program installed. If it finds one then it goes dormant and "hides". If it doesn't find a virus program it disables your ability to go to Norton, McAfee, Trend and F-Secure antivirus sites. Then it emails everyone in your address book.
