    1. [RW-Help] Images on my webpage
    2. Hello, I am new to the list and I am having a problem. I am using Microsoft Office 2000 to create my htm webpages. I have uploaded all of the images and the background to my freepage account, but the images are not showing up on the webpage. I had microsoft office 97 before and had sucessfully learned how to change the raw HTML so that I could sucessfully add photos to my pages. I however do not understand the HTML coding in 2000. Does anyone use 2000 to create their pages at Rootsweb's Freepages? How are you getting your images to show up? I know that there is a problem with the HTML Code and that is what I need to fix. You can view my page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~yarbrough/main.htm Sincerely, Renee Pierce Smelley Longview, Texas <A HREF="http://rsmelleygenealogy.homestead.com/">Renee's Homestead & Family Genealogy Site</A> <A HREF="http://jsyarchives.homestead.com/">John Swanson Yarbrough Archives</A> <A HREF="http://www.topsitelists.com/homestead/RSmelley/">Top 100 Online Cemetery Transcriptions</A> <A HREF="http://2ndtexascavalry.homestead.com/">2nd Texas Cavalry Company K</A> - Do you know any of these men?

    3. Good evening, Can anyone tell me why all the subscribers to my lists using MSN have their email bounced? This has been an ongoing problem for a month now and MSN has yet to reply to any of my messages. I just sent the 4th one to them? Is MSN having conflict (server) issues with Rootsweb? Are there settings that anyone is aware of that can prevent this from continuing? Thank you, Addie

    1. [RW-Help] Upload probs
    2. Ian Bates
    3. Morning everyone, I`ve just completed my first attempt at a Web page for my local Family History group, using Word 97. I`ve saved the file as HTML doc. and named it index.html . I used WS_FTP to upload it and a couple of small giffs. However, when I go to the site http://www.rootsweb.com/~ausygs/ All that is showing is INDEX OF /~ausygs . No sign of index.html page or the giffs. I`ve also tried uploading index.html after it was saved as html in "normal view" of Word 97. as well as "on line" view of Word 97. Would someone have the time to talk a newbie through what he`s doing wrong ? Many thanks Batesy

    3. Valorie: Thanks for trying manifest, I am sorry that it crashed your Netscape. You are the first to report that. I have had Netscape (4.7.2) crash but it does that after 3 or 4 hours running. I have been told not to run it so long. The applet puts up one line of buttons and text boxes with a green text area below. There are no html pages, just the applet screen and a help screen (also part of the Java applet). If you click the Help button you should see some text. Also, you need to pop the window up to a full screen size. I can't do that in the Java program for all browsers and operating systems and monitors because I don't know how big the screen is in pixels. ---John > Subject: [RW-Help] Re: AOL Fixed Pitch Font problem in Java > Date: Sat, 09 Jun 2001 22:31:37 -0700 > From: Valorie Zimmerman <valoriez@zimres.net> > To: RootsWeb-Help-L@rootsweb.com > > John, the Java applet not only crashed my Netscape 4.77, it corrupted it > so that I had to re-load it! 1. [RW-Help] AOL Fixed Pitch Font problem in Java
    2. John Lucey
    3. I have put up a web page at <http://hompages.rootsweb.com/~manifest> that runs a Java applet for making spaced out columns for use by Rootsweb ISTG ship list transcribers. It works well using Netscape and IE but there is a problem with the AOL browser. The program makes a request for a monospaced font but the system returns a proportional spaced font. The Java code looks like this: Font currentFont; currentFont = new java.awt.Font("Monospaced", Font.PLAIN, 12 ); System.out.println(" " + currentFont); In.setFont(currentFont); The "System.out..." line was added to try to test what was happening. It works in Netscape and IE showing a monospaced font returned. It also works with the AOL browser if I request the browser to open the file off of my local hard disk. Then the monospaced font is returned and the applet works correctly. When running Netscape, I need to select the System Console from the Tools menu to be able to see the output from the "System.out" line. IE automatically turns on the System Console when needed. The AOL browser also automatically turns on the System Console when I open the file from my hard drive but NOT when I open the file online. Of course, I really don't care which font I get as long as it is monospaced (or fixed pitch). So seeing the console output is not the real problem. I just mention it as it may be a clue to what is different for AOL with the online file. The problem with the proportional spaced font is that the user can't see on the screen what the completed tabular output looks like. Anyone got any ideas what is happening? If you want to take a look, go to the url above and click on Help. Then scroll down a bit. Of course you need to try with AOL to see the problem but with other browsers you can see the correct appearance. Also, please try it if you are using a browser that I haven't mentioned and let me know what it looks like. Maybe it is a problem in some other browsers also. (I am using the AOL 6.0 browser.) ---John

    3. I, too, have engaged in invigorating tussles with Excel trying to get columns neatly lined up for lists of data. I had some MS Access databases passed to me, and then take the data to Excel to "clean up." I find that when I save what I've done to HTML, it creates a HUGE file. I also use FrontPage. Here is what I ended up with, by (lots of!) trial and error: In MS Access: View - Datasheet View Highlight and Copy desired section In Excel: Paste into spreadsheet Make any necessary formatting changes Save as: (this is key) Formatted text, space delimited This saves it as a .prn file In FrontPage: Insert File Choose "as text" Choose "formatted paragraphs" The columns come out nice and neatly lined up. Then save FrontPage as normal. This creates a fraction of the size file that I had experienced when saving as HTML from Excel. 3. Hi all, I first started putting together a web page last November and at the time registered with Rootsweb and so received my UserID and password. Being a newbie, I played around and uploaded a few files but took them off again as I was`nt happy with the presentation of them at the time. However, with other committments I have`nt uploaded any files in all this time. In short, I registered but never got around to uploading my pages. Now I`m ready to start again. But. Password does`nt seem to work anymore. (if that is the problem ?) At any rate I can no longer log on to Rootsweb to upload. I keep getting the error message :- 530 Login Incorrect. Logon Failure, so quitting. Before I approach "Betsy" does anyone know if my Registration may have been cancelled on the basis that I have`nt actually used it in all this time ? Thanks for any advice. Ian

I have a question regard a couple statements: One place says "do not use CGI scripts" Another says mailmerge is "CGI script but special" does this mean mailmerge is an exception ? Please clarify this ! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I can create a mailmerge with my program [Web Express Form Handler] that suit my needs. It is called "mvforms" which is based on Perl "if host is running Unix 5.0" Which I understand Rootsweb does ? This creates a CGI bin on my site that is called "cgi-bin/mvforms.cgi" In that bin is the following hidden fields: .forms_type=email .email_dest=duanewin@gateway.net .subject=form response .intro=The following information has been submitted .thanks_url= thanks.html .remove_indexing This Guestbook is mailmerge [complete to me ?] ! 3. Hi All Can anyone advise on the use of using databases in Excel format in your webpage? I am almost finished compiling my * first* webpage and I'm using Netscape Composer. I have 2 databases given to me by a listmember in Excel. I have no basis for my worry other than that I haven't run across too many of them on the web, so I don't know whether I should try to use it or just convert it to a regular table. Actually, I did try using one excel sheet in the webpage a few weeks ago. I got some error message and I ended up doing the whole thing over in a table -- I just couldn't handle yet another new thing to tackle! <G> Thanks for any help! Linda

    3. Hi Linda - Well, I can tell you how I use Excel. I receive data from people who type up marriages for the Woodruff County web pages, and do so in a word processor. I then bring the data I receive into Excel (I use Excel 97, it's simpler, as I recall). In Excel, I get it formatted like I want - centered, text sizing fairly small, etc. I then save it as HTML. I take the HTML code into my HTML editor, and make changes, modifying the background and text colors in the Body statement, and add a few more things (titles, etc). But I do use the HTML that Excel produces. My hunch is that using the HTML works better than trying to use the Excel, although I've never tried to use the latter. I've seen pages that used Powerpoint, rather than the Powerpoint code, and didn't like it as well. FYI. Hope this helps- Gloria ======= >Hi All > >Can anyone advise on the use of using databases in Excel format in >your webpage? >I am almost finished compiling my * first* webpage and I'm using >Netscape Composer. > >I have 2 databases given to me by a listmember in Excel. 3. Look at it this way: If I mail a check and I have problems with the vendor, there are half-dozen different state and/or national organizations who want to hear about it, and who have the clout to fix it -- starting with the Postal Inspector. But, if I put my plastic # on-line and have a problem, there are far fewer organizations who handle complaints of that nature and generally, vendor disputes just don't rise to the level of my filing a police complaint.
