numbers of lines meant nothing. It is the KB size of the page. Should keep to around 50-60 kb. 75 kb is too much. I have a question. I am currently using the genealogy section at my rootsweb free pages.(freepages.genealogy.rootsweb) Am I restricted to just using the genealogy section with my free pages. I also have a Archive site that I am moving to free pages as well as a Confederate Calvary site. Can I put these other sites in the History and Military sections at freepages? Before I try I wanted to ask this question. I sure wouldn't want to go back to genealogy and find that my current uploaded pages were deleated from that section. that depends. Come in 3 ways. 1. How wide left to right? 2. How long top to bottom? 3. How much information on one page? Sharon - What does WS_FTP say/do when you attempt to upload? Does the listing (file names and dates) on the Rootsweb window (on the right) change or remain the same? Hi all, I need some minor help. Someone (who teaches WS_FTP) is helping me to figure out why I can't up load changes to my web page. She has asked me to find out the size of my web page. So, how is this done? Does Rootsweb limit me to a certain size for main page as well as for any additional pages created as part of the main page? I hope this makes sense!! Sharon
Leigh, With all due respect, this issue is not just for those that maintain a mail list. I have had the same problems on my GenWeb site. It applies to wherever there is an e-mail address registered. And, the only way that it can be prevented is for the webmaster to refuse any MSN e-mail addresses to be posted on the website. This is pretty severe solution, but MSN is a problem for webmasters too! - Ron Dailey Webmaster Floyd County VAGenWeb P.S. - By the way, Leigh, thanks for the info on how MSN e-mail works! I use to be an MSN subscriber and even then I didn't understand some of the things they did. -----Original Message----- From: Leigh Compton [mailto:elsi@augustmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2001 7:05 PM To: RootsWeb-Help-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [RW-Help] MSN email I just forwarded Diane's note to this list --- because it bounced to me with a subject line of Subject: {not a subscriber} Re: [RW-Help] MSN email for the exact reason she mentions. Hi Cheryl! Thanks for finally helping me understand where folks were getting that misunderstanding. No, that is not what that means. It means IF you are using affiliate links (the kind that pay you for folks who click on the link), then you should only link to Ancestry/MyFamily affiliates. Your links to other websites are not included in this at all. If you don't mind, do check out the new wording for that part of the Agreements and let me know if I have made that any clearer or not. I will try this again as I may not have explained by Web Site construction under Web Express that has not been published to Free pages at RootsWeb. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ REF. [folder] means folder icon which is a directory {or Sub Directory} [e] means a web page ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Problem: The .gifs for the Guestbook to not appear on the assigned spot in the Roots Web Guestbook ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My Structure: [folder] Windsor and Hunt Families Genealogy [folder] images { all .gifs req'd of the guest book , jpgs, and midi files req'd for the Web Site} [ e ] index [ e] guest book [ e ] surnames [ e ] photos Please not that when testing with IE5.5, that the pages work as they should BUT the guest book .gifs are not in their proper assigned "boxes" Any suggestion, as I do have the correct .gifs in the sub directory folder call "images" ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Another question: Is it better upload the Site with the surnames html files or would it be better to upload the surnames html AFTER the site is uploaded ? Hello, As an MSN user, trust me, this is an MSN problem not a matter of msn users not knowing how to use e-mail correctly. I've set up an alternate address at yahoo.com so that I can receive e-mail without problems. And, expect no assistance or response from MSN. Those of us who PAY for MSN service can't even get the courtesy of a reply. Needless to say, I will soon be an ex-MSN customer but I've tried hard to resolve the issue because I hate to give up an e-mail address I've used for 3 years. So, please have patience if you administer a rootsweb mailing list and are having problems with MSN subscribers. It's highly probable that they are just as frustrated as you are. On the RW page describing Freepages, it specifically says that from Freepages one may only link to Ancestry/MyFamily affiliates. This would imply that no one using Freepages can link to, say, National Genealogical Society, or FamilySearch.com, or EllisIsland.com ??? Or is there subtext I'm not seeing? Thanks. I want to thank everyone for thier Help. Below is what Pat Asher wrote and the information is correct. I spent all day yesterday working with the raw html and finally figured it out. By the time I get really good at doing this I will probably be able to purchase a HTML editor. Anyway, this has certainly made me have to brush up on my html again. Thanks again for all the suggestions. It has been truly appreciated. For those that would like to now see what my page looks like you can view it at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~yarbrough/index.htm The links are still broken and I still have a way to go before this is all up and running. Hi! MSN and Hotmail have the option to block mail sent to multiple receipents. That is to avoid junkmail. Kelly
Mostly it is just that MSN, like AOL, just are not very user friendly. Since they have gone to "web based" e-mail, the whole e-mail system has had problems. AOL and MSN for some reason think that having absolute control over everyone's every move on their site is desirable. I for one disagree with them. Hopefully the other ISP's will be able to stay in business long enough for the majority of the public to get wise to AOL and MSN and their shortcomings. As far as what we can do as webmasters, I don't think there is very much we can do. When I get bounce notices, especially like the ones you describe, I promptly delete the e-mail address from the query, etc. That isn't a very good solution, but I tell those that come back and complain about it that they should take it up with their ISP (AOL or MSN, or whoever) - and maybe think seriously of changing ISP's. Well, this might help somewhat - I occasionally use MS Office for one of my non-genealogy web sites, perhaps to get some document converted quick and easy. I choose to use MS Office 97 over MS Office 2000, because it generates simpler code and I can read it easily. MS Office 2000 generates more complicated code - uses styles sheets, sometimes "Frames", and so on, and doesn't always show up on other non-MS browsers. So if I don't want to code something directly, and want to generate simple code to deal with (which is most of the time), I stick with Office 97. I looked at your web site but your images are buried in that insane code, so beyond me. The usual problems with images are 1) names not spelled right /or right case and 2) not uploading as binary files. Good luck!
