The new system should solve that issue completely. The poster can reply to an Obituary and still classify the response as a query. This should virtually eliminate the unwanted query response to data post problem. In a search for Obits ONLY those posts categorized as Obits will show up--not the responses tagged as queries. > > The idea of the board admin have to use user-id and password to post > transcribed bios, obits, etc *EACH TIME* really stinks. Logging in for your boards won't affect your lists in any way. Valorie PS: There are new lists, Board-Admins-L, and Board-Users-L. Everyone will get better help over there, than here. 3. Well folks, if ever I felt like saying "I told you so; now is the time." When the money coming in wasn't enough to even begin to keep up with the cost of the keeping the Rootsweb servers up and running, we went to "clusters," and "banners" for advertising. (A very dumb move I thought then and I still think.) We had dozens of boards none of us who actually work at this wanted and we sure as heck didn't need them. I really do understand why that was financially necessary. Well - that didn't produce enough income to keep the project afloat. So - along comes the sell out to Ancestry. It is not Bryan's or Karen's fault. They worked long and hard and put their own money into the project for years! The problem is/was that the visiting public would not support the project even with as little as $12.00 a month! It's entirely possible that some of the state and county admins never kicked in any money either. If even half the people who used the sites had sent in that twelve bucks; perhaps the project could have continued as it was envisioned. On my Fayette County Iowa USGenWeb site, volunteers had typed in over 400 bios and obits. I don't even know how many queries there were; there were about 50 will extracts. Now, all a visitor will get by clicking on one of the board icons is a constant try to connect to ancestry, on and on and on! I have two other counties; I don't have the heart to go see what is happening there. What am I supposed to tell all those volunteers? I really loved the boards; they made it so easy for a visitor or a volunteer to post information that researchers need! I've wondered over the past couple of years why all county admins didn't take advantage of what the boards had to offer. NOW I KNOW! I don't know what will happen to the data posted on the county pages that isn't on a board. I suspect that someone at ancestry.dam will find a way to screw it up also. I guess it's true that one gets what they pay for. Doesn't seem quite fair that those of us who DID pay for Rootsweb are NOT getting what we paid for. There are no free rides, even on the internet. I will really mourn Rootsweb - as far as I'm concerned - it died. We should all have known better from the beginning. NOTHING is free! Except the time and heart and effort we have put into all those sites. I guess they aren't ours anymore; they belong to ancestry. By the way, David, if you are still reading this stuff - this is just one example of why I never would allow the info on my county pages to be duplicated in the archives. I predict that it will not be long before you see all the information in those archives burned on a cd for sale by ancestry. My main dilemma right now is whether to pull all my counties down quickly or hide and watch for awhile. NOW THIS IS REALLY FUNNY - we in the USGenWeb have an election going on just now. FOR WHAT? What difference does it make??????? Can we vote away ancestry and all the garbage that came with it? Afraid not. Linnie Hoover Howell cc for three USGenWeb Counties

You can now search and post all types of data as follows: What used to be covered by 7 boards in a suite is now consolidated onto one master board. This does not remove any of the functionality of having the 7 separate boards as the one board gives you the option of selecting a 'category' when posting. If you are posting a query or general message you need do nothing with the category drop down menu. if you are posting data, select the appropriate data type from the menu when posting. By selecting the data type when posting, you enable board searchers to find your post under this specific data type. Search ONLY for a specific data type without all the hassles associated with moving from one board to another or searching separate boards individually--all of the features of 7 boards are rolled into one for ease and convenience. Also, note that the drop down menu includes a new expanded selection of data types!!! Here are the marriage, birth, death, cemetery, etc. boards you've all been wanting in category selection. Hope this helps! Joan RootsWeb

    3. I just did a GOOGLE search for my surname and the messages on the surname list came up. I tried to print one with some information that I did not have. It wouldn't print and there is now a message at the bottom of the message that says: "© Copyright 1996-2001, MyFamily.com, Inc. All rights reserved. This material is for personal use only. Republication and redissemination, including posting to news groups, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of MyFamily.com, Inc." So now it looks like all information that we have been asking for is now copyrighted by MyFamily.com. So the next question is what is going to happen with our private family sites at MyFamily....! Are all of our photos, and information going to be next? MMargo
