    3. The ruling actually concerned means of distribution -- a writer who writes for hard-copy publication was upset that his article then appeared in that publication's on-line version without his consent and without additional compensation. Such as: if you write a column for your local historical society's snail-mailed newsletter, and they give you in exchange a year's free membership, THEY CANNOT then put your electronicly-submitted column on their web-site. To put it on their website, they need your specific, explicit and written consent for which you may charge an additional fee. The devil's in the details, folks. One of the most requested changes to the old GenConnect system was the ability to globally change contact information. Coincidentally, this request was often made by novices who didn't think about adding a response to their own post with the updated email. The only way to have a global change ability is with a master database of names and email addresses. A password is necessary so only the User can change their information in MyProfile. Pat

    3. Carol, You make some interesting points though I would also say that while this may have been feasible back in the days of old for us dinosaurs, in the modern day of UCEers, the vulgar, and the nasty (well maybe just more of them) that having some restraint on posters only is not a bad system. Personally, I truly don't see the login process as burdensome and see that advantages that amass from it as well outweighing any negatives. Also this system IMO allows better management and control for the novice in message boards. Yet while saying that it is still takes a little to get the full appreciation for the process until you have had a really good wander. Of course, I am involved with the system so am not completely unbiased. Plus having been crawling through boards doing some work and cleaning out junk as I wander, I become even more biased <g> that this will be a cleaner less abused system (well very hopeful anyway). Although my board 'View Options' give the Enable Gateway switch ON. Besides, can we use that switch as board administrators? If so, how? The information about these things is terrible! Also I think it awfull for genealogists with a question to go through a login procedure first. This does not work, specially with older people who does not understand the English language so well. Sometimes I put their questions on the query (message) board myself using their own name and e-mail address. Now this does not work anymore. What a pity! May be someone can help. Thank you! 3. it is off right now until the glitch is fixed. And as for the admin info. You need to go to your board, and in admin mode, click "View/Edit Adoption Info", go down to bottom press "submit" button. This will activate the Admin Info for the public to see. Do not worry about the oxymoronic name, solution having been offer just to change to "Welcome Information" David Dennis Ahern wrote: > > I have a list, AHERN-L@rootsweb.com, which formerly forwarded any posting > on the AHERN query board to all subscribers. [?] of this list and can't seem to >> unsubscribe cause I still get mail ~~~~ I'll reply publically as well as privately. This list (RootsWeb-Help-L) works like every other list at RootsWeb. To unsubscribe, you have to send a new e-mail (not a reply or forward) to the -request address with 'unsubscribe' as the only word in the body of the message. Remember, if you are getting digests (784 addresses do), you have to unsubscribe from the -D-request address. The other 285 of us can use the -L-request address. For completeness -- new e-mail message to rootsweb-help-L-request@rootsweb.com *or* rootsweb-help-D-request@rootsweb.com Now -- just to add some confusion -- some of you are subbed multiple times. If you have more than one web account (not counting FreePages), then you *might* be subbed to the list more than once. You'll never get more than one copy of the messages, but you might have to send the unsub in more than once. Send multiples until you get the "you have not been unsubbed" response. If all else fails, send a note to the admin using rootsweb-help-admin@rootsweb.com -- the admin will take care of it, though there's no promise that it will get done immediately. The admin has a life outside of RootsWeb, including a job, a family, and some volunteer work. Regards, Elsi

    3. I think the frustrating part for those of us who have been around a long time is that we either must stick with the "new and improved" system or start all over. I have successfully re-adopted my boards and have played around in the system a bit. I personally do not like it -- but my reasons really stem from requiring people to register/sign in each time they want to post a message. A free system should be free -- meaning no dumb signin phase. I am not slamming RW or this new system because as a professional webmaster -- this is a really common part of most BBS systems on the market today -- they all ask for this information. My frustration comes now in deciding whether to keep the new system or find my own BBS. The sad part is that if I decide to find another system that is more to my liking I am asking my visitors to start all over (we have over 5000 queries posted to my county site). I am keeping them from being able to access these county statistics just because I don't like the format/layout and steps required to use the system! It is not a comfortable place being between a rock and a hard spot -- I am sorry that the volunteer is being asked to choose here -- that should never have been done to us.
