    3. Somebody suggested a workaround for finding missing obituaries. That misses the whole point of what I was trying to address and that is the problem of links that were previously set up from some page or another. Where a link used to go to a specific obituary, for example, now it comes up empty handed because everything has been reorganized. Forget about suggesting workarounds. That will not work for people that are following hard coded reference links from other boards or pages. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | The Ahern Family Genealogy Website Acton, Massachusetts | http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    3. That is very true, Dennis. Thousands of links have been broken, and will have to be updated. But that is the very nature of the Web, is it not? There is no way to sugar-coat it -- a way was NOT found to make redirects for each individual post. Once all the boards have been moved into their final logical postitions, the website owners who care will find the obits and other posts with their new URLs, and update them. Those who don't care, will at least leave a clue for the persistent researcher. Valorie Dennis Ahern wrote: > > Somebody suggested a workaround for finding missing obituaries. 3. the url for Somerset Co is maligned. I figured out the problem. It should be outrageous simple .... http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.somerset&type=obituary I simply cut off the main url for the county, after the county name and add only &type=obituary Got the exact result. Just replace obituary, with other classifications as listed below. 3. I worked on this a few hours tonight. I am getting very good at removing files using ws_ftp pro. My problem now seems to be that when I type in the <ftp://users.rootsweb.com>ftp://users.rootsweb.com and try to publish, Front page jumps to previously written <FTP://users.rootsweb.com/public.html>"FTP://users.rootsweb.com/public.html" each time this happens it puts junk in the file. That is why I am getting good at deleting files. Do you know how I can erase unwanted destinations from the publish screen on Front page? My thanks to everyone. I have a lot of good information to share if I can ever figure this out. <http://www.rootsweb.com/~vtcbarna/index.htm>www.rootsweb.com/~vtcbarna/inde x.htm is or will be my url

    3. I realize that this is old, but I did hear that the Resource pages were going to be updated, today. Also, someone has figured out how to link to just Obits, or just another of the Classifications: This is part of a post by Denny Shirer to Boards-Admins: "Link for obituaries for Shirer surname board http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?f=setsessioncookie&r=rw&p=surnames.shirer&ONOK=http%3A%2F%2Fboards.ancestry.com%2Fmbexec%3Fhtx%3Dboard%26r%3Drw%26p%3Dsurnames.shirer%26type%3Dobituary&cookiename=CLASSIFICATION&cookievalue=obituary Link for obituaries for Somerset Co., PA board http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?f=setsessioncookie&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.somerset&ONOK=http%3A%2F%2Fboards.ancestry.com%2Fmbexec%3Fhtx%3Dboard%26r%3Drw%26p%3Dsurnames.shirer%26type%3Dobituary&cookiename=CLASSIFICATION&cookievalue=obituary Just replace "obituary" in the link with one of the following to pre-filter the other classifications: bible biography birth cemetery census death deed immigration lookup marriage military obituary pension will Leave it blank to choose all. You will have to edit the value of "p" to match your boards directory but this should work for everyone who wants to maintain some resemblance of the old system to help ease the transition for the users." I hope this helps somebody... Valorie Dennis Ahern wrote: > > I was just poking around with the search engine as I sometimes do and wnet > down a path that petered out in the new boards system. Q: How/why did this happen? A: It happened because the server was busy and couldn't get a lock on the counter file before the default timeout period for retrieving and updating the counter. Q: Can I fix it? A: Nope. It doesn't happen very often, but only the owner of the server (RootsWeb, I presume) can add more resources to resolve the problem. In my opinion, counters are interesting, but not vital. Does it really matter whether your page has been viewed 175 times or 179? Regards, Elsi

It appears that your FrontPage setup has caused some extraneous directories to be created in the account. The only 'public html' directory which counts is the one named 'public_html'. Every other variant which you've managed to create needs to be deleted: Public.html public.html publichtml And, somehow FrontPage has managed to create other directories which should be inside the public_html directory, but are instead in your account's home directory: _borders _derived _fpclass _overlay _private _themes images And I'm not sure why there's a subdirectory named 'vtcbarna' in there. In short, it's a mess. Since you have WS-FTP, I'd suggest logging in with it and deleting all these extraneous directories (everything except the supplied public_html one). If there are files inside the directory, they have to be deleted before you can delete the directory. Then, review your FrontPage set up with Ken Rury's hints and tips for FrontPage users. Just substitute 'users.rootsweb.com' for 'users.freepages.rootsweb.com' in his directions. Ken's tips can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~krury/wfrontpage.htm Regards, Elsi Regards, Elsi
