    3. I have a problem with FTP that I hope someone can solve. All my filenames are in lower case. When I FTP them, they all change to upper case. I have tried to rename the upper case to lower case, but it refuses to cooperate. Is there a setting somewhere with FTP that will correct this? Carmen Finley

Dick: I've never seen this error, but from the message you posted, I'd guess that the file you're trying to upload has an invalid character in the file name. ('Filename accept') Rename the file on your PC to have only letters, numbers, and the 3 special characters minus (-), underscore (_), and period (.) Regards, Elsi

    1. [RW-Help] Re: Downloading files from RW
    2. Carol Hepburn
    3. Hi Diane, Sure -- this is the easiest way to recover your files (though you shouldn't rely on RW to have the most current backup of your files!). You will need to connect to your RW account and then select the files on the server side and download them back to your computer. I would suggest that you setup a folder to receive your files and images into first -- then connect and download them. Once they are on your computer you can edit them and send them back up if needed. You can also grab copies of your files right through your browser if it would be easier (though personally FTP is much faster). Just go to your website url and choose save as from the file menu. In Internet Explorer 5.0 or better you can save the entire page including graphics. In older versions and with Netscape you will save only the html file. You will then need to move your mouse over the images on the page and right click and choose save as image so that the pictures and backgrounds are saved as well. Hope this helps solve your problem! -- Best wishes, Carol Hepburn chepburn@qwest.net Phoenix, AZ USA

    1. [RW-Help] Re: FrontPage 2000 Help
    2. Carol Hepburn
    3. Hi Sherri, Here are some tips to help avoid getting local links on an established web in FP. 1) Download the files into a newly created folder on your hard drive. Make sure to download the image files into a folder called images (lower case name) inside the new folder. This is how FP will setup the new web so you want to make sure that you are already following this pattern with any existing website. Ex. My Documents > My Webs > GenSite (new web) > images 2) Open up FP -- select Open Web from the file menu and select the new web folder you just created. Before you actually open a file to edit, press the refresh button so that FP will reindex the entire web site (this can be done at any time so long as you don't have a file open but are inside the web/directory). Also do this if you download a file after a web has been created -- you get the error "This file is outside of the current web). Just close all open windows except for the main FP window and press refresh - it will reindex and you can open up the new file. This also works when you make new graphics and they don't show up inside the images folder (pop up box for placement). Refresh and they will be there. 3) Open up a file and edit it as you normally would. Save the file. FP should accurately place the links as file.html or images/file.gif in each of these files so that when you upload them the links work properly. If you didn't create a web for the files to download into or placed the web inside another web -- you will get links like ../webfolder/images/file.gif Thanks to FP it is helping you locate the file and images but this won't translate well to the server unless it is set up just like your computer is. If all else fails and FP won't redirect the links - open each file in editpad (notepad plus) and find/replace your hard drive string to remove that reference (leave only the file name and images/file.gif links). Then save. Refresh FP like above and from that point on - FP will keep your links like they should be and not make them links to your hard drive. One other note - if you create a new file within FP and do not save it FIRST -- the links will be to your hard drive. It is best to create a new file in the web then save it. Then start adding new information to the page. Hope this helps! -- Best wishes, Carol Hepburn chepburn@qwest.net Phoenix, AZ USA

    1. [RW-Help] drive crash loses webpage
    2. Hello, I lost my hard drive recently and foolishly didn't have a backup of my webpage at rootsweb homepages. I made the website using Microsoft Publisher and have reloaded the software on my new hard drive. Is there any way to download my files from the rootsweb server back into Publisher so I can modify or maintain them? I'd hate to have to start all over. To further add to the difficulty, I know nothing about html or ftp. :( Any help appreciated. Diane

    3. A friend hired someone to do some courthouse research for him about 15 years ago. Later, my friend who hired the researcher, sent me a copy of the research that was done, consisting of extracts of early (pre1850) deeds and other documents, and has given me permission to post these extracts on my webpages. Since it was never published, and I have permission from the person who paid for the research, is there a problem in posting this? That is the only thing I can think of that might be different. Unless I created the new web in FrontPage incorrectly. It has been a while since I created a new web so I may have forgotten an important step in that process. Does anyone have a clue what I may have done wrong? My URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~asgs I didn't get a copy of the confirmation from the old webmaster; just the password, so am guessing at the ftp address. But I think I did it correctly. I set up the WS_FTP95 LE like this: GENERAL TAB: Host Name/address: rootsweb.com Host type: UNIX (standard) User ID: asgs STARTUP TAB: public_html The setup in FrontPage 2000 for "specify location to publish your web to": ftp://users.rootsweb.com/home0001/users1/asgs/public_html This is the path that came up when I connected via WS_FTP95. Didn't manage another connection at ANY speed until about 8:30 tonight (a few minutes ago) when things went like greased lightening. I couldn't get my GenWeb page to come up either.
