Can't we just declare Outlook to be a virus and ban it? <snip> In reality, the problem is not really the applications Outlook or Outlook Express but the fact that these two are the leading email applications in use worldwide. In the way that Internet Explorer is the leading browser, AOL is the leading Online Service Provider, and Windows is the leading Operating System. The security problems do not lie as much with these applications but with the following attitude of "hackers": "If I want to spread virii and TJs [Trojan Horse programs]to the widest possible number of computers then I have to configure them to get into Windows 9x or ME, Outlook and Outlook Express, and Internet Explorer. I could make it work with Pegasus or Linux but who uses that stuff?" words of a self proclaimed "hacker". So, by that token, if everyone migrates to Eudora and Netscape on a Linux platform then hackers will just change their method of attack to get those applications. Eudora, Netscape, and Linux are no safer security wise than Outlook, it's just that hackers are not targeting them. just a thought... CoachT

    3. David, Thank you for bringing this virus to our attention for like you said many many genealogy sites are employing Adobe Acrobat files - like one of my sites, State of CT websites, etc... This virus is called: VBSpeachyPDF@mm. It is a worm type of virus that disguises itself as a *.pdf file - one created with Adobe Acrobat. However, it functions only when opened in the **full** version of Adobe Acrobat not with Adobe Reader. It is included in Norton Anti-Virus definitions and I suspect in the other AV programs. At the moment it appears those with only the freebie Acrobat Reader on-board have nothing to fear with it - only those with the full blown Adobe Acrobat program - like me. :( Here is more about it. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.peachypdf@mm.html With all the viruses running rampant these days I highly recommend everyone enable their Anti-Virus Auto Protection, enable their E-mail Protection, up-date their AV programs once a week and scan their whole computer at least once a week. In the past 3 weeks I have received via E-mail the SirCam virus at least 18 times!!!! I have not been affect with it for religiously check every attachment I receive. But the scary part of this particular virus is that Norton E-mail Protection does not detect it as yet - Its Auto-Protection does. Norton readily admits this problem: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001072315182006?Open&src=w I suspect the many many virus attachments I've receive came from subscribers of some of these genealogy mail lists. Now I'm not saying it came via the mail lists for RootsWeb does not allow files to be sent to the mail lists. The rash of these virus attachments came after I had posted replies on a couple of the lists. I suspect people kept copies of my messages in their Email program. They then got effected with the virus; the virus replicated itself; and it sent itself out to every E-mail address it found in the person(s) E-mail program or/and My Document folder and I was one of them - lucky me. :( Moral of the virus story is to have auto-protect ***and*** e-mail protection enabled and up-to-date!!!! --- Susan SGTAYLOR1@att.net My Genealogy Website - sgt http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/ ----------------------------------------------- USGW Mansfield, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/mansfield.html USGW New London, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/newlondon.html USGW Norwich, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/norwich.html USGW Windham, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/windham.html USGW Coordinator Plymouth Co., MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ USGW Plymouth, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ ********************************************************* At 01:09 AM 8/18/01 -0600, W. 3. Since there are some sites using PDF, this alert came through very good source - Edupage newsletter. The virus alerts through this newsletter are extreme rare and posted only if there is concerns. NEW VIRUS SPREADS USING ACROBAT FILES Portable Document Format (PDF) files used in Adobe Acrobat are susceptible to an experimental virus, according to analysis by HispaSec Sistemas head Bernardo Quinteros and Privacy Foundation CTO Richard M. Smith. Quinteros and Smith say the virus, Outlook.pdf, embeds itself in PDF files via Outlook. Users who open the file with Acrobat are encouraged to click on an image of a peach, thus releasing the virus. The e-mail addresses in Outlook's Address Book and its folder are used to spread Outlook.pdf. "Since PDF files are considered safe by Internet Explorer, it means that Acrobat security holes are easy to exploit from Web pages and HTML e-mail messages," warned Smith. Dennis- First of all, the merger between Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com took place over a year ago--it wasn't recent. Second, the commercial taglines were added to non-sponsored lists by RootsWeb over a year prior to the merger with Ancestry.com--so they date back to mid 1999 although they weren't always used for anything more than advertising RootsWeb services themselves for a time. When a list is subject to mandatory commercial taglines the list admin won't see them on his Tools page--they exist in addition to the optional taglines set by the admin. > > > go to your mailing list utilities and check customize and see > > if there is button to unclick for commercial taglines. > > I see no such button. Separate emails (as opposed to commercial taglines) are NOT connected to your mailing list and/or the gateway from the message board. These would be coming to you from a different source. I think others have already explained to you how to "uncheck" the boxes that are causing these messages to be sent to you about various Ancestry products or services. Joan

    3. I just want to clarify one point. Where David said: Dennis Ahern wrote: > > On Mon, 13 Aug 2001, W. David Samuelsen wrote: . > > Grandfathered mailing lists don't have commercial taglines added > > at all. Those are the ones that were before the merger of over > > a year ago. > > We've had our list for a lot more than a year, but when they redid the > message board system recently we all of a sudden started getting these > taglines on every mail from the query board. . The dividing line as to whether a list has commercial taglines or not doesn't have anything to do with the merger at all. Before the cluster lists were created, the only lists and boards Rootsweb had, besides the USGW and Maiser lists, were ones where the listowner was a financial contributor. None of those lists had commercial taglines. When the Communities and cluster lists were created, they ALL had commercial taglines, and always WILL have. That is how they were supported financially. If you adopt a "sponsored/untagged" list directly from the listowner, you can decide whether or not to have the commercial taglines added to your list posts. I personally almost always have them turned on -- one more way to support Rootsweb. If you adopt a list from the list of adoptables, however, it will have taglines. If you are a former contributor and ask to have a list created for you, it will have no taglines unless you choose to have them. Whether or not a post is gatewayed will have NO influence on whether or not it is taglined. That will be determined by the list settings. Valorie PS: Yes, to answer the title of this post -- Ancestry IS using the lists for ads, when they don't sell the ad space to someone else. They do NOT, however, send anyone anything they don't ask for. Come on people -- if Ancestry doesn't succeed financially, We Will Have No Rootsweb. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

    3. now you are making more clear - go to ancestry.com where you check for your password - there is one section - unclick the list of newsletters there. This will stop those newsletters. I get only 1 newsletter daily because that is one I wanted to get. I don't get any other newsletters I don't want from them because I unclicked all the ones I don't want. 3. taglines in every mail from query board??? I haven't seen any in mine at all. Like I said, any mailing list that was not grandfathered (created before the clusters/merger) automatically have the taglines. go to your mailing list utilities and check customize and see if there is button to unclick for commercial taglines. And as for "check her for latest in CDs from Ancestry.com" - if it is in 3 line tagline - nothing you can do unless you are list admin and go to your mailing list utilities to check and see if the button is there or not. And secondly, all surname boards are automatically gatewayed unless requested otherwise, or place gc-gateway@rootsweb.com on reject list. You will see the difference. 3. I just had someone unsubscribe from a list I maintain because she was getting too much junk mail. When I challenged her that I would notice any junk mail becuase I am on the same list, she clarified that what she was getting other emails since she subscribed to the list as follows: >I can say I have received independent e mails from the listed >sites below. They are found in the bottom portion of many of the >e-mail's I received from the [listserver]. >http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog >http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library >http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com My interpretation of this is that Ancestry.com is building email distribution lists from the email that gets forwarded through their system every time someone posts a query or other message to a board that has automatic forwarding. I do notice that all such messages get an Ancestry tagline appended to the bottom of the message. My uderstanding was that these listservers were supposed to be protected from SPAMmers, but if the fox is guarding the chickencoop, then we have no way of protecting our subscribers from unwanted advertising. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | The Ahern Family Genealogy Website Acton, Massachusetts | http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    3. those are taglines. Worldconnect is not an ad at all. It is a resource site. The others are Ancestry's and one of them isn't an advertisement at all. It's a library resource! And they are NOT using emails to build up their distribution lists. If you want to get advertisements from Ancestry - go to their site and click on the list of newsletters to be sent. NO one on Rootsweb lists are spammed unless they subscribed to Ancestry's OWN lists. Grandfathered mailing lists don't have commercial taglines added at all. Those are the ones that were before the merger of over a year ago. Nothing to be alarmed about. This has been going on for long time and nobody bothered until her. Yahoogroups have the most obnoxious taglines anywhere because they insert theirs above the list's own taglines. W. 3. Hi Betty, It isn't fancy, but the following code is what I use on the Colquitt County GA site and I got it from Rootsweb: <CENTER><I>You are our&nbsp;<!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/counterord"--> visitor since April 27, 2001 -- thanks for stopping by!</I></CENTER> &nbsp; You can see it in action at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacolqu2/ Jacki At 08:42 PM 8/10/2001 -0500, you wrote: >I've lost the code for the hits counter that I had on my homepage. 3. I've lost the code for the hits counter that I had on my homepage. (I upgraded the site and the upgraded page didn't include the counter). I seem to remember that I originally found the code somewhere on Rootsweb but I've no idea how to refind it! Can somebody help please. Christopher Richards

This is a paf file, NOT a gedcom file. You can ONLY upload gedcom files to World Connect. A paf file and a gedcom file are NOT the same file. You need to make a gedcom file [the name must end with the extention .ged] and upload this file to World Connect. Fleta
