Does Frontpage Express produce "clean HTML" or is it littered with proprietary M$ extensions? According to Webmasters FAQ: "RootsWeb does not presently support Microsoft Front Page 98 extensions." http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/webmasters.html#msfp98 I'd assume current versions of Frontpage use propriety extensions as well. della wrote: > You can download for free frontpage express. You can download for free frontpage express. It works just like microsoft word. No html is needed at all. The buttons at the top are almost just like words. just type in at your browser window: free frontpage express and go into it and download it! Build your page on this just like you were building a microsoft word page almost and hit save. Another tool I find helpful is Stones Webwriter. You can get it free too. Again go to your browser window and type in Free English Version Stones Webwriter. And simply download it. This program lets you see your built page as is and in html. With this program you can also learn html easily, and make changes to your webpages with copy and paste much easier! Need a good free ftp? Try Core FTP! Again go to your browser type in: Free Core Ftp and download it for free! The reason for passwords is security. The password scheme used by Rootsweb has more security than a system that allows users to pick their own. An attack on Rootsweb servers by hackers could prove disastrous. This could happen if passwords themselves were not sufficiently difficult to be hacked, and then used for access. This is the situation with all passwords. The question for hackers is why attack and what will be the result? Rootsweb has huge mailing lists and massive amounts of storage that can be compromised for whatever evil motives these hackers seem to have. Beyond that, there are many numerous technical explanations for password schemes. One should be satisfied that Rootsweb feels the resource they provide is valuable, and probably significantly irreplacable, and chooses to employ tight security. I've never understood why users can't choose their own password for freepages, since other secure servers allow password changes based on choice. I don't want to cause a debate. I'd just like to understand better the reasoning behind this fact. Judy Judy- Most places at RootsWeb that currently require a password are not security issues and allow you to choose your own password. When you choose your own password many people choose names like a surname they are researching or something very easy to guess--including a password they use for other purposes, making it easy for a cracker to hack into the password-protected resource. When that resource is a Post-em Note or your own WorldConnect GEDCOM or a mailing list or message board admin page ONLY those specific resources would be compromised if someone did access them. It wouldn't put security of a server at risk. It is different with a web site account password as there is a certain amount of server access you have with a web account and therefore it requires a greater degree of security. Joan

Joan, Can you expand, if possible, on why it is a security issue? I've never understood why users can't choose their own password for freepages, since other secure servers allow password changes based on choice. I don't want to cause a debate. I'd just like to understand better the reasoning behind this fact. I had a really hard time with mail merge, I see that I have this in the required lines but I don't remember where I found it or why it is called b-, but maybe this will give you something to look for... I do remember that I found this on another site besides rootsweb. b-value-required="TRUE" Mary Ellis > > I've been reading the MailMerge documentation, and I don't see anything > about the ability to make form fields required. I've been reading the MailMerge documentation, and I don't see anything about the ability to make form fields required. Or even if MailMerge supports required fields. If it does could someone point me to a location where I can find how it is done. Thanks Glenn Gilbert
Thank you all who offered suggestions on finding James Graham Armstrong. I learned a few things about how Yahoo operates in the UK. Unfortunately, none of the permutations of the server has worked, as yet. Could it be his mail box was full? I don't know, but will continue to try. The address he gave really did reflect co. and not com.: [email protected] This was how he wrote it. I now have the original that he jotted down. Still puzzled. Carmen Finley
Does anyone have any ideas on how to locate one James Graham Armstrong in Ireland? On Friday night, at the Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve in Guerneville, California, one James Graham Armstrong stopped to have a chat with the ranger gate-keeper. He was visiting from Ireland and expressed some interest in the Armstrongs of Northern Ireland, conceivably those who were ancestors of Col. James Boydston Armstrong for whom the park is named. He left his name and e-mail address: [email protected] This information came to me third hand, through friend/volunteer with whom I have been working on the Armstrong family. I tried the e-mail address and it was returned with unrouteable address message. There were some 500 Armstrongs on the Yahoo directory and no James Graham Armstrong. However, there was a Graham Armstrong in Larne, Antrim. His address, armstronggraham, was also returned as unrouteable address. Also found an Armstrong-Graham marriage on GenForum. Anyone have any ideas how to further investigate? Carmen Finley, webmaster, Augusta VAGenWeb Santa Rosa, CA
