I have already resigned from the Jeff County message board, partly for the same reason. Please let me know the correct way to do this, and if this is not the right address, I need to know. Nan Dixon, [email protected] Nan- Simply go to your tools page here: http://lists2.rootsweb.com/mailman/admin/nyjeffer/ and under general options change the list admin email address to Pat's and give her the admin password for the list. If you would prefer to change the password to one of Pat's choice you can click on the password link and change the password also. There is an alternate method, of orphaning the list here: http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/orphan When the list becomes adoptable Pat can then adopt it here: http://resources.rootsweb.com/adopt/ I don't suggest the second method as it is more cumbersome than the first and also someone might adopt the list before Pat gets to it--first come first served. Never, never change the admin address to listmaster as someone else suggested--that is NOT the way to transfer a mailing list to someone else nor is it the way to orphan a list if you don't have a new admin to transfer your list to. Joan PS: Please note that this question would have been more suitable for the [email protected] mailing list.

Can anyone tell me what FTP address to use to upload to RootsWeb directly from Front Page 2000. Up 'til now, I've always FTP'd in through IE but, after upgrading to IE7, that wouldn't work. I solved the problem by uninstalling IE7 (from "Add/Remove Programs") which reverted me back to the earlier IE version and I'm now able to upload through the browser once again. The whole thing got me thinking, though (I hate it when that happens). There must be a way to upload directly from Front Page, but apparently my pea brain can't handle it because everything I've tried fails. I started with ftp://loginname:[email protected]/home0001/usa/co/accountname/public _html/ because that's where I go if I FTP straight into my account. That failed (The URL ftp://loginname:0 is invalid), though I don't understand why it's seeing :0 when I typed my password. Tried the same thing but omitted the public_html/ but that failed too. Tried using the same thing I use to FTP through my browser and get spanked again (Could not find a web server at [email protected] I've also tried ftp://www.rootsweb.com/home0001/usa/co/loginname/public_html/ (425: Can't build data connection. Connection refused). I've also tried a plethora of variations on preceding three options, but crash & burn every time. While it's true that I won't die if I can't upload directly from FP, it sure would be nice to let FP make sure all the new pages that got edited get loaded and so on. BTW, I've tried both with and without enabling folder view for FTP sites and with and without allowing passive FTP. Perhaps I'm suffering from cranio-rectal inversion? Can anyone help me figure this out? Sheila www.foothillsgenealogy.org Sheila All Incoming and Outgoing E-mails are Sanitized for Your Protection by Norton Anti-Virus - a Symantec product

Janelle had no choice but to try to transcribe. The basic issue still exists. WS_FTP claims to have established a connection, but then it gets closed right away, even before any login info is sent. Janelle - try to connect to some public FTP server to see if it is, indeed, Charter, blocking your access. For example, try: ftp.ibiblio.org and select the "Anonymous" checkbox on the right side of the connect dialog window. If you are able to log in, then the original problem with connectivity is at RootsWeb/MyFamily. If you get the same type of error as before, then the problem is not at RootsWeb. If so, then can you download WS_FTP onto the computer of a neighbor who also uses Charter, and try the ibiblio site from there. If that works, then the problem is not being caused by Charter, but exists within your own computer/modem(!). John P.S. There isn't all that much traffic on this list, so maybe you could subscribe to it in non-digest mode so you see the emails right away, your replies have the proper subject, and they get threaded correctly. See http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/RootsWeb-Help/2006-12 to see what's been happening to the threading in the archive. :)
Check the over all spelling on connections if this is what it is trying to access, it won't work useres. roosweb.com copied and pasted from message below Betty Brooks ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 15, 2006 3:00 PM Subject: ROOTSWEB-HELP Digest, Vol 1, Issue 20 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I checked the Passive transfer box early on with this problem. I'm OK there. Firewalls have been checked and I'm OK there. When I try to connect, my computer files are showing the left. The Right side SHOULD be showing my remote files, however it is totally blank and when I try to make a connection, this Connection Error appears: Connection Error- This could be caused by any of the following reasons: Your network connection is down. The host address is incorrect. The server you are attempting to connect with is not available. I think the list softwar has just been updates so they will wait before adding to it Rootseb is better but you could use yahoo or msn or goups.google to create instant lists whilst you are waiting Hugh W On 12/14/06, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, > Can anyone here help me? First the mailing list software was completely replaced. It took a lot of time to do it and even more to help everyone learn how to use the new tools for administration. Next, there was a change of Listmaster. Andrew was replaced with Melissa and she is also learning. To make her job more interesting, 2 of the list servers have broken down and had to be fixed. Third, about 2 weeks ago a new message boards system was implemented and it has a lot of 'bugs' to be ironed out. Melissa is also busy with that. I know it's hard to wait, but perhaps your Gen. Soc. group will wait more patiently if you tell them about all the changes going on. You can also write to the listmaster at [email protected] I don't know how much time has elapsed since your first request, but you should allow at least 2 weeks before following up on it with the Helpdesk or Listmaster. Sharon Dulcich Kern Co. Volunteer P.S. This list isn't for this type of question, but is for webmasters to get help from each other regarding their websites housed on Rootsweb.
Hi, Can anyone here help me? I have requested a mailing list at least 4 or 5 times now for our gen soc. I am not getting a response. Folks on our gen soc board are beginning to think I am snowballing them. I have went to the help link and resubmitted for this and that is not working! Thanks, Brenda Brenda K. The error message you are reporting now is different from the one you reported initially, i.e. "server address incorrect". You indicated you are using WS_FTP. WS_FTP creates a session log. Attempt your connection, then copy and paste that entire session log here so we can take a look. Pat

That will prevent them from being used as an FTP server (port 21), http server (port 80), etc. However, those ports have to be allowed for the destination machine, otherwise browsing the web would be impossible (without using a proxy). FTP is special in that under normal operations, the server (RootsWeb) will try to actively open a data channel to the client. Firewalls make this impossible. I have had my ISP techs here at my home for 2 different 2 hour sessions. Both techs confirmed that Port 21 is closed to non commercial customers. In message <[email protected]>, [email protected] writes HI Jannelle That's not really a rootsweb problem, but something between you and your ISP. (I've had a similar thing with my ISP and e-mail blocking of rootsweb mails, which they consider spam - so I sympathize! You should see the spam I get now!) I'd suggest you ask your ISP for a static IP address through which they allow port 80 to communicate. You can set your computer/router to that static address and things should work as they used to. It's not difficult for them to do that, but they will be reluctant to do so! (You'll be a special case then ....;) John > >OK... Janelle- I've experienced problems with Charter blocking certain ports, and they've "explained" that it is due to inordinate amounts of spam, or porn coming from them. Take that with a big block of salt. It's my understanding that you can ask them to "unblock" certain URLs if requested. They sent me a list of "blocked ports", which appear below. Port 80 is a very common port, used by zillions, so it seems to me that they block sites on those ports, rather than entire emanations. You might go directly to them with your request.
