Despite trying all the advice I could gather from this board and online, as well as trying everything I could think of, I found that IE7 simply doesn't play well with FTP and wound up having to uninstall it. Or, you can open a page and re-name it, sending it to the directory you want. It *should* recreate new links but check the site summary> broken links to make sure. When you re-upload, it will automatically upload new and delete old. Using any other program, you may need to do more manually. It depends on the program. If you choose to delete through Fileman, it's a good rule of thumb to NOT delete until AFTER you have successfully changed and uploaded the changed pages in the new folders. You'll have to make the manual changes on your PC, with whatever program you are using; or if you hand code, you'll need to do all that first. Re-upload through Fileman or ftp. Check the new pages and folders. Only after you are positive the changes are what you want, then delete the old pages / folders. I can't quite imagine anyone would care to "hack" into a genealogy site, but then again, I can't figure out what's causing this problem. I know we've had some server problems, but I don't recall ever encountering anything quite like this in all these years. Anyone who has the username and password can sign on to your account and make changes so it would depend on if anyone else has been "working" on the account. I would think it was not a technical glitch as no one else seems to be having a problem like yours. Since, as someone else already suggested, you probably used your RootsWeb site as a redirect to another site in clear violation of the account agreement, and did not respond to the email from [email protected] offering you a chance to correct your violation. Accounts never closes an account without contacting the account holder of record. The Accounts Department has logs of mail sent to you and your response or lack thereof, so you will have to address your concerns to them. Pat

Or at least they were. ;-) I'm about to believe my site's been hacked, which seems perfectly bizarre to be sure, but not nearly so bizarre as this being some action taken by Rootsweb without notifying me at all. The only way I discovered it was a routine attempt to upload files. This is just weird. Surely Rootsweb would've notified me of any problem and given some reason - or some instructions or something - before deleting files and changing permissions on the account. Wouldn't you think? Or if not, at least have notified me that they did it?     3. Without rehashing all of Sandy's problems, let me say that it is indeed possible to inadvertantly reset permissions on a server. It generally does require a "live body" to do it, but it may not have been done intentionally. On another server, I have had my permissions inadvertantly reset a couple of different times. In each case, someone new was working on the server, didn't bother to check the listing of legitimate users, and did a blanket reset of permissions, forgetting to either include me, or create a group access setup. You will definitely need a "live body" and I actually would recommend that you go ahead and contact the technical support folks. Chris

    3. Yes, both are my accounts, and were originally created by me many years ago. I'm the only one with the password to either. Of course, for reasons that seem to elude everybody, *someone* at Rootsweb generates the passwords and seems to keep them - not the case at Earthlink (which, incidentally, has extremely secure servers). Regardless, I've not shared my password, nor have I given permission for it to BE shared with anyone, so the only other person to have it would be "the password keeper" at Rootsweb. And somehow, I can't quite imagine that my files would be deleted and permissions reset without even contacting me, particularly given that I created the account when RW was "born." My website has been mirrored on the 2 servers from the day one, as was recommended to ALL county sites many, many moons ago.     3. With Frontpage, you can drag & drop within Fp itself. Or, you can open a page and re-name it, sending it to the directory you want. It *should* recreate new links but check the site summary> broken links to make sure. When you re-upload, it will automatically upload new and delete old. Using any other program, you may need to do more manually. It depends on the program. If you choose to delete through Fileman, it's a good rule of thumb to NOT delete until AFTER you have successfully changed and uploaded the changed pages in the new folders. You'll have to make the manual changes on your PC, with whatever program you are using; or if you hand code, you'll need to do all that first. Re-upload through Fileman or ftp. Check the new pages and folders. Only after you are positive the changes are what you want, then delete the old pages / folders. Can some technical "glitch" in the server delete all the files from our accounts and re-set upload permissions "accidentally"? Is that possible? Or can this sort of thing only be intentionally done by a human? If the latter, then who would have the *ability* to do that sort of thing to our individual accounts? While I'm attempting to get it "fixed," it would be nice to have some idea as to what might've caused this to happen.     3. Are we certain that a living, breathing *person* is at the other end of that <[email protected]> email addy? It's pushing 24 hours since I sent a message - and still no word. And I still can't upload files to my account. And the files that were in my account are still missing. Can files be deleted and permissions reset "accidentally"? If not, who has the ability to do that? I can't quite imagine anyone would care to "hack" into a genealogy site, but then again, I can't figure out what's causing this problem. I know we've had some server problems, but I don't recall ever encountering anything quite like this in all these years. And that's a lot of years, because I created this account back at the beginning of time (a la Brian!) Remember that moving files will NOT automatically change the links to those files unless you are using an editing program that will do it for you. - like FrontPage/Expression Web, Dreamweaver or maybe the free editors.
