Something has changed on the HomePages website in the last few weeks. When web pages did not include a meta field that specified a character encoding, the web server did not include one in its headers and my pages displayed with my browser's default set which is Western-ISO-8859-1. But recently, the website HomePages (but not FreePages) has been specifying Unicode-UTF-8 in its header (even if the meta field specifies something else). Pages displayed using this code cannot handle directly entered accented French characters like àáèé ... For viewers to see the page how it was meant to be, they must manually switch the character encoding back to Western-ISO-8859-1. But this only works for the page I am viewing and the setting does not stick if I look at other similar pages even on the same server. I hope that this was done inadvertently and that it can be corrected. Thanks. Jacques PS. If the Resources server is down temporarily, your page will show the holder for a broken image link. Has nothing to do with moving WWW accounts to a new server. Pat

Since the server crashed a few days ago, the counter I had just installed on a RootsWeb sponsored web page shows up with a red X. I created a new counter code and inserted that code on the page but it still doesn't show up. I'm not quite sure what to do now. Thanks much, Marie.

Alice, The one I use is ftp://users.rootsweb.com/public_html Then there is a place on most FTP programs to enter your "account name" and password. Web sites (everyone's) are housed on different servers, and one website can be housed on separate servers. I had this concerning ONE folder on my website, which was on a different server. All my images were loaded correctly, and linked right, but none showed - until I spoke to Ancestry-Rootsweb technical about another matter and mentioned my trouble with my RW website. The server my 1 folder was on had some sort of trouble. When they fixed the server, that folder worked. Sometimes you can find FP versions on Ebay (www.ebay.com), or LiveDeal ( www.livedeal.com), or you could try google for buy+Frontpage and it might pop up on another seller. So maybe the server crash affected my files being upload. I was using Front Page on another computer when I created the above website. Now I'm using "Microsoft(r) Expression(r) Web Designer (EWD)" and used it to create www.rootsweb.com/~cajscdar<http://www.rootsweb.com/~cajscdar>. I was having problems using it to upload to the website, so I used "Core FTP Lite" to upload the files. Hi, Sue- Reading between the lines of your posting, perhaps you believe that saving your changes to the index.html will /automatically/ upload them to RW. This is not the way it works. The index.html is a page like any other -- /except/ it is the "default" page that the RW servers deliver if the user agent (browser) does specify another page. For example, the address "http://www.rootsweb.com/~txllano" has no page address, so the server looks over your site's base folder for an index.html or index.htm and delivers that to the requester. It looks for the files in that order: .html then .htm, and returns the first one that it finds. On your site you have both files, index.html and index.htm. If you are making your changes in, and uploading, the .htm file, you can upload that all you want, but the users specifying the base address www.rootsweb.com/~txllano will never see them. Here are the two different index pages you have on your site: 1. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txllano/index.html 2. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txllano/index.htm The "best" way to maintain a website is to keep an exact replica on your hard disk, with one folder corresponding to the RW base folder of www.rootsweb.com/~txllano and an exact replica of the subfolder structure and contents below that -- exactly as you want it in the RW server. Testing is simplified if you use what are called "relative links" to your pictures and among your pages, i.e. * Relative link: cobooks.htm * Absolute link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txllano/cobooks.htm They are called "relative" because they are relative to the directory within which they appear, i.e. they work on your hard disk or your RW site. If you do this throughout, you can display and navigate your "local" copy on your hard disk until it has exactly the effects that you want, then upload the new/changed files to RW. Link usage is explained here: http://www.compugoddess.com/relvsabs.htm (or Google: relative links). You didn't tell us what you use to develop your pages, but you appear to be using Netscape Composer? When you insert a link, there is a check box to make the URL relative to the current page location. Using absolute links makes it difficult to test without uploading first. This is because loading, say, your index page into your browser from your hard disk will show that page, but any absolute link that you click on will load the page from the RW server. Hi Sue, Could you be a little more specific? For example, do you find more problems with text? images? links? Since we on the List don't know what you changed, we only see what's on the page-- not necessarily the problem you get. First, after visiting your site and then making changes offline, do you delete your temporary files? Refresh your browser? You *might* be seeing your last version because your temp files store the last image of the way your page looked. Second, IF the problem is with images (red X, etc), the most common reasons are: 1. the link doesn't match the actual file name 2. the link points to the wrong folder 3. the actual location of the picture and if it was/was not uploaded. As my comments are just guesses, please let us know what exactly you changed and do not see. As the other responder said, your page looks fine to me. I don't know why I cannot get the ritual down... Sometimes I can make changes to one of my pages and it takes no problem. The next time, it will not upload no matter what I try. I save all the work to the index .html page and, if I go to the link .index.html then I see all my changes but if I go to the site that everyone else sees and that I get when I go to the county page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txllano/ I'm not getting any of my uploads..
