    1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Web editors and uploading files
    2. Lena C.
    3. I hate to admit this... but I do straight HTML using Notepad. I started my site using a design template I found online and then just moved the content into it. This isn't going to be a good idea for everyone and it probably takes more time than using an editor, but for me I like to have that control over the site. Doing straight HTML, you know how it will display because there's no funky style sheets or XML or other strange things that some editors put in that don't work as expected in all browsers. Plus, then you can upload one file at a time through an FTP server (which is a biggie for me because I like to upload while I'm working on stuff in case something goes wrong and it starts displaying funny I can find out what's causing it a lot quicker). Of course this is really only a good idea for people who almost strictly update content, it's not the best idea for doing redesigns. It's also not a good idea for people who aren't pretty comfortable messing with the HTML or people who like to add non-HTML components to their sites. So I can't really offer suggestions on editors, but for those wanting to do minor updates and upload them quickly, I recommend Notepad and FileZilla. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am able to process the updates - they do appear on the web, just fine. The problem is that Frontpage advises me that "the server has unexpectedly stopped the connection" just as the web updates are processing. What happens is that although the material shows up online, it does not clear from the Frontpage memory, so when I need to uplaod again, I am uploading all those updates again, plus any new ones. I've done this three times, thinking things would sort themselves out, however the number of updates in the memory is getting way too huge. > In an effort to resolve this I have done the following: > > Disabled my Firewall > Adjusted the cookies so that I authorize each and every one > Ran Defrag > Ran Disk cleanup > Tried to upload with another ISP - does the same thing > In Frontpage - chose Apache Server and disabled active server pages, ensured enabled with MS Frontpage server extentions is unchecked > Tried to reset my computer to a date prior to February and can't because I haven't changed anything since the beginning of January and my last successful update > Made a copy of My Web and tried to upload that - same problem, even without all the updates to upload. Have you doublechecked your files to make sure there are not any files that are not allowed? Have you recalculated hyperlinks BEFORE you try and publish? You can try Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks. Someone with fp2000 can point you to where it is if not there. pat ---------- Pat Geary, Microsoft MVP - FrontPage We discuss FrontPage and Expression Web http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/frontpage/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/expression-web/ Genealogy Web Design Tips and Tutorials http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/ http://www.blog.family-genealogy-online.com/

    3. First, my experience with FP2000 and "the server has closed the connection" usually has to do with 2 things-- 1) my wireless connection momentarily quit 2) there is some file type in my PC web that RW does not like. For example, *.zip, file names with spaces or weird characters. Make sure you check inside those VTI (??) folders for images files, and even in folders that begin with underscore, such as _includes. If you've looked over file types and names, you might try marking a few pages as "do not publish" (it's under properties). I marked my largest maps after the first time they were uploaded, and they remain marked a year later. FP acts normally and publishes the new pages. It leaves the excluded pages published since they already do exist on the web. I'd work slowly-- mark 2 or 3 pages, upload; mark more & upload. You may notice FP gets less confused each time, and is less problematic. If you can think of other clues, or if this suggestion does't help, do write again. 3. I hope someone can help me. I have tried working with the Rootsweb Helpdesk and they have no idea what is wrong. I have been using Frontpage 2000 since 1999 to manage the website on Rootsweb. Admitedly it is a big website - abt 31megs. All of a sudden, in February of this year I began having trouble with the upload process. In an effort to resolve this I have done the following: Disabled my Firewall Adjusted the cookies so that I authorize each and every one Ran Defrag Ran Disk cleanup Tried to upload with another ISP - does the same thing In Frontpage - chose Apache Server and disabled active server pages, ensured enabled with MS Frontpage server extentions is unchecked Tried to reset my computer to a date prior to February and can't because I haven't changed anything since the beginning of January and my last successful update Made a copy of My Web and tried to upload that - same problem, even without all the updates to upload. It stops at the processing web updates Disabled my virus software while I tried to upload the changes Anyone out there have any ideas? Sylvia

    3. I use NVU and like it too with the same complaint -- when working on large tables it will freeze up and use up lots of memory, and it becomes necessary to close it out and reopen it. Actually I was glad to seen these comments as I thought I was doing something wrong which was causing NVU tables to act goofy. On 4/24/07, Peter and Connie Bradish <[email protected]> wrote: > I use NVU and I like it, but it does not appear to have been updated > since June 28th, 2005. 3. I use NVU and I like it, but it does not appear to have been updated since June 28th, 2005. The author seems to be working on something called Composer (is/was the name of the Mozilla based Netscape web page editor I used to use). I don't know what it is compared to NVU. The only complaint I have is that when I build or add to tables, it keeps gobbling memory until I save the page with the table, close NVU, start in up again and return to editing the table. I also have to FTP images separately. Annoying but I can live with it for free. I was looking for a more robust web page editor and was seriously considering Dreamweaver 8 in spite of its high price (yes, I know, you can get it cheaply on eBay but there has to be a reason for a price to be so low for a full blown legal copy). If you go for Adobe's Creative Suite software, you'll be taking some serious dollars because the Design and Web editions contain more than just Dreamweaver. Instead I'm investigating the /free /CoffeeCup HTML editor <www.coffeecup.com/freestuff/> and its related /fee /programs <www.coffeecup.com/software>. It's a bit fragmented (unlike Dreamweaver) since there are several programs you might want to put together for the page editing done the way you want to do it, but, you only pay for what you want and some of it is free. Plus, there are trial downloads (30 days for most or all) you can try out. For perspective, Adobe PageMill is the predecessor to Adobe GoLive, which is the predecessor to Dreamweaver. Adobe bought Macromedia when they decided to capture the web page editor market and basically replaced their GoLive. Having said all that, if you like the Dreamweaver you are using and can afford the upgrade, that's the way to go. If you are new to Dreamweaver, then prepare for a new user interface and commit to the time necessary to learn it. It's not a simple drop in. They have a trial version so try it before you buy it. Free? NVU. Free and some money, check out CoffeeCup. Take care and good luck... Peter Bradish P.S. I'm not a professional. I'm retired and have all my days full of the things I've always wanted to do and have little spare time. ;-) Jacques L'Heureux wrote: I use Dreamweaver 4 because I got it free from my previous employer. 3. Hi Judy, You didn't indicate (at least I don't think I saw it) the operating system (i.e. Windows 98, 2000, XP) or the version of Photoshop. New versions of Photoshop (CS, CS2) run best on XP and newer. Having your Photoshop program on the same drive (C-drive) as your operating system is not a problem. The ideal is to separate the programs from the operating system. But it's not a necessity. I run Photoshop 7 on my Windows 2000 laptop with 512mb RAM and all on the c-drive. I've never had a problem. It's quick and works well. I do know that newer versions of Photoshop will not perform well on my laptop and that's why I have stuck with Photoshop 7. If you're running newer versions of Photoshop on say Windows XP, 512mb RAM may not be enough. It will run but you may see performance is bad because it runs slow. You can easily fix this by adding more RAM. 1GB RAM would be great. Again this will all depend on how old your operating system is and whether you can add more RAM. Adding RAM is easy, it's just a matter of snapping extra memory sticks into slots in your computer. If you don't know how to do it ask a computer savvy friend or take it to Best Buy and ask them to do it. Hope this helps, Shawn >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: ROOTSWEB-HELP Digest, Vol 2, Issue 38 >Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2007 01:05:51 -0600 > > > >Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. I've just gone through a similar shake-up, and have found that Adobe products are very particular, especially with the activation issue. I've also found that some of their techs are nearly complete duds. You might try this number, which is listed for activation problems, but I think you're more likely to get a tech who knows something else too: 1-866-772-3623, or a toll number, 1-206-675-6222 At 07:17 PM 4/20/2007, you wrote: >Hi, > >I had to rewrite my harddrive and reload my computer programs. > >Photoshop reloaded but a message came up saying it might be better to have >Windows and Photoshop loaded on 2 separate physical drives. 3. Hi, I had to rewrite my harddrive and reload my computer programs. Photoshop reloaded but a message came up saying it might be better to have Windows and Photoshop loaded on 2 separate physical drives. Before, I did load Photoshop and Image Ready on an external drive -- and Windows automatically made it load through C>Start>My Programs.. But, I was so fed up after a week of computer problems and reloading that I just loaded all the programs to C. I have 512 RAM and a large harddrive (20G I think). I'm used to having Frontpage open and using Photoshop at the same time if needed. So will I now have trouble? If I will have trouble, what steps should I do to uninstall Image Ready and uninstall Photoshop (from C) and reload back to the Programs folder I had on the external drive? Please give simple, step by step directions. Although I'm smarter on the computer, loading programs and uninstalling still gives me pause sometimes and I'm not always sure about the steps to do. (And which steps first, second, etc.) Judy

Nope, but you have missed the point. There must be a visit from a different IP address before your IP address will be counted again. It makes no difference whether the visit from the alternate IP address happens in the next 10 minutes, or the next 10 weeks. Your repeat visit to the site will not be counted unless someone else has visited in the meantime. Pat

In other words if I visit a page today and then not again for six months (using the same computer and IP address) will my future visit not be counted because of the today's visit? The RootsWeb Counter will not count consecutive repeat visits from the same IP address. In other words, you can not affect the count by visiting the page yourself several times in a row. When I visited just now, the count was 13378. A visit from a different IP address should register as 13379. Pat

    3. A couple of our web page users alerted me about our counter at http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbhs/ possibly not functioning. The image box that shows the count is there, however, the numbers do not appear to change. I've checked to see if I've changed anything by accident. It appears I haven't. I've checked to see if it is a browser or security setting issue. The count is the same in all browsers at all levels of browser security. Just need to know if the problem is something I need to fix. If so, how? Shari at BHS
