Hi Patricia, Thanks for the reply and the link. I have the old 95 version of WS-FTP so, my view doesn't match the tutorial but, it doesn't matter since I had no problem getting everything to connect. My problem is that, after creating my 'new' site I leave ftp. If I make and changes to the new site and save them, then go back to upload any changes, the new site name is not on the ftp profile directory..I have to go back to the old site where this new was linked and save and upload the changes in it to get everything to work. Where is the new site in ftp? Why won't it keep the new site name in the directory of ftp. It is in my local directory of course, but that is all. I have gone several times to create a 'new' profile and the same thing happens.. Anyway, thanks for the help. I will figure it out I hope. Either that, or just keep on using the old profile site. Hi, I've just received a new web page and all the necessary info for setting up the account. I have gone several times to WSFTP and filled in the data for a 'new' site. Everything works well as long as I stay in ftp. The remote directory comes up and I can transfer items. However, when I come out and go back to the page and make any changes and try to log on to the page again in FTP I cannot find the profile name.. I think it may be because the new page was once, a link in another page? I can make all the changes I want, in the old page and upload them in the old page and they show up in the new one. But, I can find no profile name for the new one to make the changes... (I'm terrible at trying to explain things so hope you understand) It has been so long since I set up a new page, I had forgotten so much and am afraid I'm leaving something out.. Anyway, I hope the several different times I've tried setting up a new page, did not 'take' somewhere in the cyberspace of rootsweb and wind up with a dozen duplicate profiles... My URL is: www.rootsweb.com/~txkgs/ I know I am so foggy on these things...hope you can help. Thanks.. Sue

I am using Expression Web and tried to replicate the error message as I have gotten it in the past. Both my freepages site and the www site worked ok so this is from memory. I believe when I got the message in the past, I just clicked OK and was then able to transfer the files. Not quite sure why EW gives you the message but it does. Will try and find out some more and post. pat ---------- Pat Geary, Microsoft MVP - FrontPage We discuss FrontPage and Expression Web http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/frontpage/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/expression-web/ Genealogy Web Design Tips and Tutorials http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/ http://www.blog.family-genealogy-online.com/
Hi there, I tried again this morning, and am still having trouble. Oh la! Maybe it is me. I am using Windows Expression ( as recently at May, 2007 for the site I am trying to make a few changes on). This is what I do when I go to publish ( this is a site that we have had on the web for two years; all I want to do is make a change to our calendar page). I go to the publish file under the file tab. Then the small window pops up that says 'Connect to users.rootsweb.com' I type in my user id ( name of my web site) and the password rootsweb gave me. A window from Windows Expression pops up that says, "could not find a web server at users.rootsweb.com on port 21. Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, than the Web Server may be temporarily out of service." I have looked at everything, tried a few other things, nothing works for me. It is very frustrating; I can do the basics but am not that computer literate, Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Pat A., Who said "mailbombing"???? I never suggested such a thing!!! You are the only person who brought up maibombing. Geesh. Good way to start a Sunday. Judy, The HelpDesk has an announcement about problems with FTP at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com So they have already acknowledged there is/was a problem. However, I checked both yesterday and just now, and had no problems connecting. Even if there was still a problem, mailbombing the HelpDesk is not going to get a technical problem fixed any faster. Hello there, I see others have been having difficulty uploading files to their pages also. I was up until 2 AM Thursday trying to upload files to my DAR web page thinking it was me. I tried again early this morning, but still no luck. Are the rest of you all still having trouble? I have been trying to upload some files to several of my county pages. I use FTP lite and have never had a problem with it. Now when I try to upload a file it tell me "Password required for ......" but the password hasn't changed, it's still there in some sort of hidden format. I don't have a clue what it actually is. Is this the result of the same kind of problems I've read about on this list recently? The server is down? I'm at my wits end about now. Suzanne
I tried to access www.usgenweb.org/de page Thurs night EDT and the RW server said the page wasn't there. Dunno if that's because they moved it off RW and the genweb push hasn't gotten the memo or if there was a problem with RW. Cheryl Jim Rickenbacker(3) wrote: > Linda, > You are not alone. it is not your end. It is a Rootsweb problem, the FTP server went down again last night. They are trying to get it fixed. This has been going on for 3 days now. I see the message is gone from the Help Desk re: ftping, but I have been unable to connect all morning again. Anyone else having problems? I am anxious to reload a page removing a link to a local church whose website has been hijacked by good-traffic.hk. This, after many hours scanning my own computer for virus' etc., to realize it's not my computer at all, but the website. Meanwhile, I'd deleted cookies etc., while checking for any problem with my own computer, so just double checking with everyone to make sure I didn't remove something I need to ftp :-) Linda B.
