Fran, Mailmerge doesn't care about the file extension for the template. Most anything except .htm(l) will work. I think the initial problem was caused by creating the template using Word instead of a text editor. Even though saved as a text file, Word saves internal formatting in the file. When you recreated the file in TextEdit, you got a *plain ASCII text* file, which is required for a Mailmerge template. You can check by saving a copy of the working template as registry.tmp, changing your form action tag to direct it to the .tmp file and testing your form again. But be sure to upload the template in text, not binary mode. Like a word processor, binary mode changes the "innards" of the file making it unusable as a Mailmerge template. Pat

    3. Pat, I created both documents in MS Word for Mac. Saved both as text files with the ext's of htm and tmp, used no rich text etc. Recreated in TextEdit. Verified no spaces on the dot lines. Stretched the page out, no word wraps. Trashed the saved file and saved as new file with same name. Uploaded in binary. Uploaded in binary and in auto modes. Refreshed my web pages each time. Verified the source. Entered data in the form, hit submit .... and all I get is: Mail Merge Gateway The following is a copy of the mail that was submitted. To: mailmerge@rootsweb.com From: @ Reply-to: root@admin.rootsweb.com Subject: Web mail via the mailmerge gateway X-mail-agent: mailmerge v1.1 X-referer: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txcolcgs/regentry.htm On Tue Sep 29 18:37:12 2009, the following message was submitted via the mailmerge server running on nobody@www.rootsweb.ancestry.com (Nobody): NAME: ADDRESS: @ MESSAGE TEXT: It appears I'm reaching rootsweb's mailmerge, but it is not finding my tmp file. AH HA!!!!! Scratch the above. I changed the template extension from tmp to txt, even though everything I read indications tmp is good. Yet now the thing works. Thank you, Pat. Without your input, I'd still be scratching my head, looking at the "path" and trying anything else, but changing the template file extension. Fran

    3. Hi Fran, The only obvious thing I see is a word wrap in your address= line in the #Setup Defaults section. Each command/directive must be on a single line and the dot/period section delimiters must be on a line by themselves with no white space. Did you by any chance create your template using WordPad (RTF) or another word processor? They can insert internal formatting which will make your template invalid. Templates for Mailmerge MUST be created in NotePad or an equivalent text editor -- NOT a word processor. 3. When you removed the banner code it apears you removed the <body> tag also. The RootsWeb lserver ocates the banner code with respect to the <body> and </body> tags so if one is missing the server gets lost. You'll probably be OK if you replace the missing <body> tag. 3. Hi, I recently had a hard-drive failure, and so I downloaded from Rootsweb some of my county pages that were not included in my most recent back-ups. I had to make some changes on one of the pages, and when I did, of course I had to remove the code for the banner ad before re-posting the page. But the banner is now at the bottom of the page instead of the top. I've combed over the coding (I basically hand code all my pages), and for the life of me, I can't see what I did to make the banner go to the bottom of the page. 2. Hi Cheryl, I am the FLGenWeb webmaster. As Pat Geary said, the site moved to http://www.flgenweb.net (almost two years ago). Where did you find the link that led you to the wrong home page and Collections page? I'll contact those folks and get it updated. There have been some recent changes to the county pages but you can find all of them from here: http://www.flgenweb.net/county/list.html Thanks ever so much. 3. Is your Firewall set to "allow" Dreamweaver to get through the firewall? Every firewall is different, but often you'll have to do or re-do your "Internet Enabled" programs (there's a LOT more than most people realize) in order to get through. It's not a preferred method because your PC won't be protected during the test, but I've turned off my firewall for a minute to see if the firewall is interrferring. Just be sure to look at the clock so you get the time, have it off the barest amount of time, and be sure to turn it back on quickly! 2. Hi, I am finally getting around to transferring my old sites into Dreamweaver. But I can't seem to get the FTP to work for rootsweb. I think I've tried just about everything. I'm using Windows XP and Dreamweaver CS3. Can anyone help? The local info is: Site Name: FLBGS-RootsWeb Local Root Folder: C:\web\flbgs Local Images Folder: C:\web\flbgs\images Links relative to: Document HTTP address: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~flbgs/ Cache: Enabled The remote info is: Access: FTP FTP Host: users.rootsweb.ancestry.com (I tried just rootsweb.com, but that didn't work at all) Host Directory: public_html Login: flbgs Password: ************ [ x ] Maintain synchronization information I've tried Passive FTP, Secure FTP and just plain FTP -- none work. I can connect with an old WS-FTP95 program, so I know the connection should work. I even added the FTP port ":21" after the FTP host. That didn't work either. Does anyone have a clue what I might be doing wrong? Rel@ively, Patrice
