    1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] OT maybe? Computer resolution and the way font looks
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. I wasn't sure where I could get help but since another person posted here about a new browser, I hope you can help me as well. I had an old-old refurbished Gateway laptop (3 to 5 years or more old). I don't know what the screen resolution or dpi was on it, but the font was readable, nicely dark (not bold), and didn't hurt my eyes. I replaced the laptop with a used Systemax laptop. It has a wider screen. Windows Explorer, AOL 9, Frontpage2000, Word, Windows Notebook etc. all have a font that looks like it is "dotty" -- like a small letter L looks like it has 3 to 5 dots down the stem of the letter. Same on all keyboard letters, numbers, symbols. Even the toolbar inside Photoshop or other programs is hard to read now. The type is normal sized print, which is fine (No, I don't need to increase font size). It's all very hard to read and gives me a headache. The only program that is OK is gmail on Internet Explorer 7. So I thought the previous owner changed the font system-wide. But I don't know what it is set on, what it should be, or if that is the problem or not. But my computer repairman suggested over the phone that perhaps this computer has a dpi and screen resolution that I'm not used to (??). He suggested that I first change the dpi and then change screen resolution. But I don't know what a "good" dpi setting is to use, or what a easy-on-the-eyes screen resolution should be. Can anyone guide me? I don't want to mess it up anymore than it is. Can someone tell me where I can learn about screen resolution? Judy

    2. Jim Rickenbacker(3)
    3. Judy, All I can suggest is this: 1. Right click on an empty part of your desktop. 2. Click on properties. 3. Click on the Settings tab. This should bring up your display settings and give you a choice of screen resolutions that the laptop can support. Either 1024x768 or 800x600 would be the usual choices for an older, non-widescreen laptop. Hope this helps. Jim Rickenbacker ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.A. 1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Which upload client is best?
    2. Charles Barnum
    3. Hello again, I need to buy a new FTP program. I have always used WS FTP but they are getting pricey. I am looking at Cute Home version. I have never used it. I talked to their Rep today and the Rep said Cute Home version would be just fine for me. I have been changing the html in a very large web site so both Fire Fox and I.E.8 browsers can read it equally well. I'm using WS 995 right now but it is limited. I have about 5,000 pages to upload. I'm afraid I'd be a long time uploading the new site using WS 995 (a free program). Expression Web 3 has a built in FTP program but it is like reading Latin to me. Any ideas? Charles

    3. Thunderbird (the email program that goes with Firefox, but is downloaded separately) will import Outlook Express messages with it's wizard when you first install it. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_from_Outlook_Express The free program can be downloaded from http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/ Thunderbird lets you set up multiple identities and pick the one you want to use when replying to a message. 3. Hello to All, Thank you for the responses and for the private responses too. I bought two HP computers at the same time with slightly different Model numbers. (One for my daughter.) It's funny that both of the old ones failed at the same time. My old one is barely running but is now disconnected. I kept getting a Norton Pop-up ad and could not stop it. I've been all day and finally found the solution. Norton has an uninstall tool. That pop-up Ad was built into both HP computers but it is gone now. I uninstalled Everything of Norton in both computers using the Norton uninstall tool from their web site. As for the Win 7 no-go for Outlook Express, I am not too happy. I do not want to add another email account. If I cannot use my jcnreno@charter.net on a new email system, then I do not want it. I already have Google and Charter.net. Hey, I love this list. I am changing to Fire Fox browser. Maybe that will fix it. Anyone had that problem with Win 7? I had to buy a new FTP program for WIN 7 as the old one does not work. Also I had to update my genealogy GedCom Program. I have yet to figure out how to use Outlook Express with Win 7. Does anyone have a solution? My old computer has all of the emails, but I can not do anything with them on the new computer as Win7 apparently will not work with Outlook or Outlook Express. I am now using an online email program through my server. Charles

You can put a Google search box on your site and instruct it to search only your site, e.g. (remove the leading dots inserted to prevent the code from executing) <.form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search"> <.input type="text" name="q" size="31" maxlength="255" value="" /> <.input type="submit" value="Google Search" /> <.br /> <.input type="radio" name="sitesearch" value="" /> The Web <.input type="radio" name="sitesearch" value="your_URL_goes_here" checked /> Your site name <.br /> <./form> However, while Freefind will spider your entire site, the above search will only return those pages spidered by Google. 3. Cynthia, I am not a user of FreeFind, but when Ancestry started redirecting from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com back in early 2008 (I think) that created problems for FreeFind users because the base URL after the redirection no longer matches the base URL in the FreeFind configuration, so nothing (new) gets indexed. Here's a thread discussing that: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/RootsWeb-Help/2008-04/1207947088 Wouldn't you be getting error emails from freefind about that, too, since it can no longer index anything? Judging from the last updated lines near the bottom, schtchdir1923intro.html is a brand new page, and so is not in FreeFind, whereas homerec.html existed in Feb 2008, before(?) the redirecting started. As for Google search, what you may be thinking about is the "site:" prefix. That's how you restrict searches to sites whose URL contains the part after "site:". For example, using this as a Google search request: site:www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohlake/schools/ shows you all the pages in your schools folder that Google spidered. I use that feature to see what Google has accessed from my sites. You can have other search terms to restrict the search even further. Like site:www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohlake/schools/ 1923 Good luck with solving your FreeFind problem. -- John S. 3. You are missing the close body tag (I only checked the first page) at the end: </body> - maybe that's it. 3. Not sure what your FreeFind problem is; did you accidentally exclude a directory? > Additionally, since Google has a "search this site" feature where you > just put in your search terms followed by a colon and the web site > address, is there a way you can put the searcher on the site itself with > the search criteria already entered for the site?  Of course, I am > looking for "free."  If FreeFind continues to work, I am happy with no > need to change. The old free Google site search for nonprofits was phased out some ago (although existing ones still work) in favor of their Custom Search Engines: <http://www.google.com/cse/> N.B. Google indexes what they choose, when they choose. They may hit your site about once a month, but may not always spider the same pages. Creating a sitemap file (which has a specific meaning for search engines, not just what some sites call a site map) will help Google know what pages you have created - but they still make the decision about what to index. More information about Google sitemaps is available as part of their Webmaster Tools: <http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en> This is one of the big reasons to have a Google account (even if you choose not to use Google Mail). -- Bob Sullivan Schenectady Digital History Archive <http://www.schenectadyhistory.org/> Schenectady County (NY) Public Library

    3. Hello, It has been pointed out by a submitter that some of my pages are not searching. I have FreeFind on my site on the front page. I thought maybe I had exceeded my limit for FreeFind, but it does not search in Google, either. My site usually Googles very well. One of the pages that does not work is http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohlake/schools/schtchdir1923intro.html Another page that I uploaded the same day is http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohlake/schools/homerec.html and it works fine. Do you see anything on the 1923 Directory that I did wrong that would make it not FreeFind or Google? Additionally, since Google has a "search this site" feature where you just put in your search terms followed by a colon and the web site address, is there a way you can put the searcher on the site itself with the search criteria already entered for the site? Of course, I am looking for "free." If FreeFind continues to work, I am happy with no need to change.
