If you are trying to block visitors from copying your text and/or images -- you can't. To view your page, your visitor must download a copy of everything that appears on the page to their computer so it can be displayed in their browser. Turning off right-click is an inconvenience if they want to save a copy, but there are several ways around it. Some browsers allow you to save a copy of all associated files when you save a web page. You can use the drop down menu to view source, then go directly to the image file on the server and save that. You can do a screen capture. You can locate the file that was used for display in your temporary internet files and save a copy to another location. 3. Hi, Please take a look at the following with FireFox (seems ok in IE8). The problem (which mysteriously appeared) is that the rows are too deep. For example, the border is followed by a 1/4" of space, then the house info appears followed by another 1/4" of space then the border. I googled this and it seems that using styles is the answer, but am not ready to tackle a new language. I changed cellspacing to 0 and omitted valign=top on the first row but neither helped. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ctmanshs/ And, what is it with the crazy </div> that RW inserts at the end of the code: </div></body></html> BTW this code W3C validates. Thanks, George

    3. Ann, That's ok, I've just not seen it on whole pages. I've seen the right-click disabled on images before. As far as methods to protect pages or images, like I said, people on this list and on freepages have commented before that if anyone really wants to copy your work, they will find a way. Since this page is mostly text, it's super easy to copy -- I'd just highlight the whole page, hit Ctl+C, open Notepad and hit Ctl+V and I've got all your words. And if I wanted it all, I could use the other methods I described. Maybe the blocking had a bigger purpose years ago, but people have gotten smarter and it's just so easy to copy ~anything~ from any website. After the Lists talked about the uselessness of using it, I just got rid of the right-click code. I don't think there are any other methods to replace it. Maybe think about what you want to protect and why. Then decide if you really want to share it. If sharing is your goal, then right-click scripts aren't needed. If you really don't want something to be copied ever, right-disable isn't going to stop someone. So I've chosen to not share certain (more personal) info and photos of my family. I think I've also included a blurb about contact me if you want to use a large chunk of my info---but even that doesn't mean the person will ask permission. 1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Reminder: End of year tasks
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. I haven't seen anyone post this yet. Just a reminder, the year is about to change so websites should change too (yeah, more work LOL). 1. Update your copyright notice to include the coming year. I'll never forget how much easier it was when I learned on these lists about using "includes". 2. Check that your E-mail is correct on your webpages. 3. If your snail address is on your web, did you move this year but still want people to be able to write to you via US Mail? 4. Delete from your web all those practice and test pages and junk you don't need anymore. I move this stuff to a folder in My Documents till I decide if I want to save any of it. 5. If you put a year on a robot tag, think about changing the content to no expire on your robots tag -- that saved me a lot of year-end updating because I had an expire date there at first. Make it really easy and tell it to go ahead and cache, not to expire, and to crawl everything. End-of year is also a good time to finally change those boo-boos. Did you put a page singly when you think it now needs to be in a folder with other pages on the same topic? Now is as good a time as any to fix (move or delete) your boo-boos, and make things more organized. Don't worry about Google page-rank... I found it was only a passing ouch and Google quickly re-found the page whereever I put it. The only thing Google seems unable to find are sock mates that go into the washer but only 1 sock comes out. ;-) Also a good time to send out a notice to people who are interested in "your stuff". Let them know your site is still there, expanding, etc. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.... Happy (working) holidays! Judy

    3. I don't want to single out Anne, I have a question about her page. I had tried to right-click to View Source. I'm clicking in a blank area and use IE 7. But I get a block, like ones used for "don't copy images" script. What code or script is preventing me from getting to View Source -- meaning, what script stops right-clicking a whole page? (versus images) Is the script just a total disable of right-click? The other comment is, although the personalized pop-up message says "Read only please", it doesn't prevent anyone from copying all the text on the page with just highlight and copy. But the pop-up does slow down people who want to help troubleshoot. I know I could have switched browsers and by-passed the block. Or, I could have even saved a copy to my hard-drive and looked that way or did a File>>Edit With to see all the code despite the block. But who wants to go around to a back door when the front door is closer? So my point is, maybe upload a copy without such block if asking for help so others can help -- / or learn -- too. And second, the block doesn't do much to stop anyone who really wants to copy the work. I gave up long ago with disabling right click because of the very informative discussions on this list about how it really provides no protection at all. I've also learned that if I don't want anyone copying my words or images, that I shouldn't put it on the Web at all.
