Connie are you on the forum? Laura has put sentence templates in RM 5 forum in Tips and Hints showing how shared items can be used. If I want to share a fact, then I can make it a family fact and not a personal one. Can do that in the Menu/Lists/Fact list and create a new fact same like Residence (family) and is labeled family. Census(family) is only for spouse additions. That is how some of us use the shared fact. I do not set up the other style of Shared Event for the very reason that Tom mentioned. Yours or someone else's? I've used it all the time, as soon as it as announced. I share : Fact (roles) christening (godparent, witness) Death (witness, informant on the death certificate) Marriage (witnesses) will (witnesses, inheritors, executors) Residence (inhabitants) Family Census (family members, boarders, visitors) burial (Person buried in same plot) MI (other names on the stone) The last is my own fact for a memorial inscription. I add it to the primary name, then share with others named on the stone. >> Is there any reason to avoid the use of shared facts? No! Some reports don't print all the shared fact info, but if in the future, they do, you're ready for them. If you don't share the fact, then you'll have to edit the witness, etc, and generate a miscellaneous fact, or a note, to say they were present at such and such an event. Why do all that, when shared facts are available? -- Regards Dave =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Laura has another suggestion or practice to get around the limitations of GEDCOM while taking advantage of RM's shared fact virtues in its reports. The idea is to use a custom fact type as a shared fact while, at the same time, a standard unshared fact type carrying the same information for each sharee. The standard individual one is included for export but excluded from reports. The custom shared one is the opposite, excluded from GEDCOM but included in reports. It's more effort but maintains highest compatibility with third party programs while fully exploiting reports. Clever! Tom
