Cheri, You've given great instructions for minimizing the amount of work one has to do to avoid the issues caused by shared facts. For those of us used to Legacy, however, where there is not just the equivalent of a Source Memorize button but a Fact Memorize button (copies an entire fact/event with its notes and its sources to the clipboard with one click), it seems like too many steps. I'm not complaining about RM, just hoping for the enhancement. On the Legacy list, they've been known to ask for a Shared Fact/Event, so I guess nobody can have it all;-) Connie
The memorizing the source to place it in another person's file is the only way in RM, I do remember we had the whole fact memorized in FO before the re wording of the basic programming was changed in RM4 and 5. I found by trial and error, that if I memorized the [alt+m] the source and then also copied to the clipboard the information that I was putting in the note section, they are two different functions. So adding a new person to the census record or... in the source citation screen, doing an alt + p [paste] will work for the source. When entering information in the same person's notes and using control + v for pasting the copied work from the clipboard. I timed myself a while back for census record of a family of 12 and had it done with 5 minutes or less. I am a big user of keyboard shortcuts and this makes it go very quickly. Yes the instructions Cheri gave was well written and thanks for doing it. But when I went to do somethings in 'Legacy' I found it was harder to work with. It is what you get used to doing and pretty soon it gets easier. Just my take on this issue. I like your work-around. I do something similar. 1. First, I do a "shared fact" and add the people sharing the fact. 2. Then go to each shared person and create the fact again. 3. I "copy & paste" each entry of the "shared fact" into the fact I created in step 2. 4. I memorized the source & citation from the shared fact & paste (CTRL-m or paste) into the created fact in step 2, source section. 4. You can then remove the shared fact from the shared person or leave it there for future RM transfers. Since I usually share my data mostly in other applications, I rarely retain "shared facts" in my database. Using C&P of a shared fact into its own fact does save me from 1) typos, 2) can change note or sentence structures per person, and 3) it saves time.
