To convert the citations to the INDI level to citations for the primary NAME in the GEDCOM can be done with a regular expression search and replace tool capable of handling multi-line patterns. My PSPad text editor is not capable of that. I have used, in the past, the very powerful EcoByte Replace Text program; while it would probably do the job, it is no longer supported and purportedly has some issues with some Windows 7 installations. It is still available and free at http://www.ecobyte.com/replacetext/ . I could help with the expressions although I am very rusty. Alternatively, it appears that a SQLite query could convert or copy all of the Person citations to the Primary Name citation. Although invisible to the RM user interface except for the Source List report, they do export to GEDCOM as sources for the first NAME tag. Subsequent NAME tags are all Alternate Names. For me, that is easier than the text search and replace; SQLiteSpy is my go-to tool to address things I cannot do within RM. Explore http://sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.wikispaces.com/ to see if it's for you. The reverse process is also needed for imports from Ancestry, Family Tree Maker and, apparently Legacy Family Tree: i.e., convert primary Name citations to citations of the Person. Why these basic differences exist is beyond me. I hope that the RootsMagician could find a way to be able to support bidirectional transparency for Person and Name citations between RootsMagic and these others. Until then..., losses or workarounds. Tom -----Original Message----- From: J. They appear to my untrained eye to be identical - an INDI and a NAME. In both cases the NAME has a name entered. My first thought would be that they could be exchanged between programs with no exceptions. But they can't as we discussed. My method was to create a gedcom from Legacy and import to RM4 then create a gedcom from RM4. So my question becomes, is there a way to mass edit an RM gedcom so the name will be sourced when exporting back to Legacy? Both are valid tags in GEDCOM. INDI is the base tag for every new person and carries the RIN: 0 @I7@ INDI - this starts the block of data about a person with RIN 17. NAME is subsidiary to INDI; it's a property of the person, so it's on a lower level: =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
