Using GeoCodes and Notes will do just fine once you are looking at a particular event in a given person's life. However, suppose you have an ancestor, Harlow Clark, who lived in Morgantown, West Virginia in 1880. You want to research other ancestors of the Clark and allied families, some of whom lived there prior to 1863, when the town was in Virginia. It would be convenient if you could do a place report that included all the relevant events, whether in Virginia or West Virginia. I guess what I am asking is whether RM might be given an alternate place facility comparable to its alternate name facility. RM would then be able to link many alternate historical place names to the same modern place name. I like to have historically accurate names associated with each event where possible. I am currently researching German ancestors, and, as Jon notes, they are notoriously fluid. GeoCoding or modern naming will locate places unambiguously, but they do not enable us to easily produce historically accurate reports. I have several locations where I want the historical name also. I have put "(historical)" in the name field. You could also enter the dates by the (historical 1729 -1768) or whaterver the date ranges are. For these locations , I go to the internet and look up the location and use the wikipedia entry and copy it to the notes. Looks to me like this would word great for the Leamington situation. There already ways help trace the migration patterns for particular area/times etc so I would not be interested in some report that showed a breakout in the manner you are asking for in West Virginia / Virginia. I have counties in NY which changed names back and forth a couple times. I don't want to see all the entries then as it would just probably muddy the brain even more! Learning about migration patterns in general seems to be of more use overall, up the Hudson, out the Erie Canal, across the Great Lakes or looking at the land routes though Ohio will keep you busy for awhile. The 1861 split from Virginia to form West Virginia also an interesting period. I would rather use software and historical information outside of RM to gather this info.
