    3. Personally I am inclined to use something like "X, presently Y, or X, formerly Y", but USGS GNIS uses "X (historical)" when the place is no longer. For reports I'd recommend MISC using same date to insure best printing order <X no longer exists under the X name, now known as Y> Several MISC one for each name variation might help searching for events in a common but changing name place Real Purpose of "Place" -to know where to find records TODAY In Pennsylvania a great deal of the western part of the state was over time carved off from an original county say Bedford County if I recall correctly. A given town might have been 3-4 different counties - BUT latitude & longitude remain constant Paul A. I use the approach you suggest but do not find it an effective method of dealing with the issue, although it may be acceptable if there are few Place Names and/or the user has an exceptional memory - neither of which applies in my case! I use a single Place Name and I have included in the Place Notes (as you suggest) the history of the Place Name with the various different names included but that does not produce, in reports, etc., events with the Place Name as it was at the time of the event so does not necessarily correspond with, for example, addresses in censuses of the time. An alternative would be to create separate, historically accurate Place Names (as has been already suggested and as I have tried in the past) but this could be confusing and would hinder searches by Place Name; for example, the Who Was There List. This might be less of a problem if one created separate Place Names using the historically correct names (annotated "(now....)" as has also been suggested) but then entered the modern-day name as the Abbreviated Place Name (in the absence of an Alternate Place Name) and report settings could provide the option of using the 'correct' Place Name the first time then subsequently use the Abbreviated Place Name. There's probably no one-size-fits-all solution but it is very interesting to learn how others have effectively handled the matter. Leamington, Leamington Priors, Leamington Spa and Royal Leamington Spa are all valid names for the same place at different times in history. Rob.
