Reading a recent post from someone who had trouble opening a GEDCOM, I thought perhaps I could ask here for help I need in several areas. I had bought (and installed) RootsMagic some years ago (Verson 1, I think), but did not keep up with newer versions because I had been using Family Tree Maker (2006) and I was used to its ease (to me) of entering data. A long time ago I had Family Origins and I liked their Cascading Pedigree Charts, that (for a long time) FTM refused to add. That's why I didn't bother to buy newer versions of FTM. However, when F.O. ceased to exist, I learned that RootsMagic had taken its place, and I did order it and used it for the above mentioned Cascading Pedigree Charts. Fast forward quite a few years. I had been using WinXP but when I had to get Windows 7 because I got a new computer, I got the version that included WinXP as a Virtual Machine within it. However, after a year of struggling with it (the XP) my computer man advised me to switch to Win7 and he has been moving my data to Win7 and I've been installing as many programs that would work in Win7. FTM 2006 did not, so I had to buy v. 2012. Yesterday I tried to import my data and finally (with the help of a techie from Ancestry/FTM) got it in. I thought! I discovered that although my kids and spouses and THEIR kids (my grandkids) are included, the grandkids spouses and THEIR kids (my gr-grandkids) are not! Another call to Ancestry. <sigh> They told me to Merge, but it is asking me so many questions I don't know how to answer. So I'll have to call them again. I have to agree with those on this list who said they hate Windows 7! So far the 'you'll get used to it and like it' doesn't seem to hold water with me! Anyhow, I also do NOT like FTM V. 2012 and I'm finding I may want to use an upgraded version of RootsMagic instead. So, the bottom line of my lengthy post is to ask how to best upgrade (I can't even find my original CD from RM V.1). Should I contact the list administrator, or call RM, or what? And once I get it, and install it, I'll need to know how to import the data into RM, so I guess I'll be back at the original subject of how to GEDCOM into RM. Sorry to be so wordy, I'm just hoping someone can relate, and can advise. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
You have the best set of coaches in the world in and on this list! Someone has an answer for most questions and there are some who will only ring in if they know a tweak that would help even more. FO was super, that is where FTM lost me! To me FO and now RM are so much more user friendly, plus we have this list for the bumps! Look at how quickly my little puzzle was sorted out! Call or email the RM folks, they probably have your name and password on file! Yes, even from that long ago! They are that good! ----Original Message----- From: Joy Perry Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2012 5:17 PM To: ROOTSMAGIC-USERS@rootsweb.com Subject: [RMagic] Moving from Family Tree Maker Reading a recent post from someone who had trouble opening a GEDCOM, I thought perhaps I could ask here for help I need in several areas. Windows 7 is great once you learn its tricks. FTM 12 is only good if you want a tree on Ancestry and want to synchronize the 2. RootsMagic has some great Webinars that teach you everything you need to know. RootsMagic has a free program called Essentials that is free if you want to see if you like it. Of course it doesn't have everything. I find that RM is reasonable, particularly if you are upgrading.
