After my previous questions about Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic, I have downloaded the most recent version of RM and managed successfully to import my data from FTM. I wanted to enter the most recent info, which was the marriage of a granddaughter. Although it's TOTALLY different from FTM (and not as easy for me) I got that in, with the name of the groom and the date and place of the marriage. However in trying to add the names of the groom's parents, I wound up with duplicate names of them and I don't know how to delete, nor can I figure out how to correctly enter the names. As I said, it's SO different from my years of entering data into (older) FTM versions. Any help would be much appreciated. TIA! Joy
I also recently converted from FTM to RM and have found that data entry in RM is not nearly as easy as in FTM, V16. It requires many more mouse clicks to enter basic data and sources as well as to navigate from one generation to the other. Maybe it will get easier with practice. I really like the ease with which it handles my relatively large database--FTM totally bogs down. It's possible that the groom's parents exist only once in the database as individuals but are linked twice to the groom. You will need to unlink them once. Check Help for "unlink". Another check is to turn on the option to display the person's record number after the name - you can do this via Tools-Options-File settings. If it turns out that there are two sets of parents with different RINs, then you will need to delete the extra persons. I don't know what your problem is with names - just open the Edit Person screen on the individual and click on the name row to access the edit pane on the right side. I have an indeterminate number of records that have duplicate facts for a person. For example, there may be two or more identical birth or death or residence facts. I would like to be able to find all of these in my database. It would be good if I could also remove them (semi)automatically, but I would settle for finding them all and removing them manually. I suspect that these duplicate facts were the result of my trying to use Family Tree Maker to quickly gather data concerning the family of a particular person into a small, temporary person tree. I would export that data to a GEDCOM. Then I would import it into a new RM tree. Then I would drag and drop it onto my main RM tree. When I performed a cleanup merge, RM would not merge many of the facts because the imported versions contained the usual, useless, generic ancestry.com family tree source reference. Well, that is water under the bridge. I'll try to avoid that duplication in the future. For now, I would just like to clean up my RM database.
