DisplayLink: iPad as an extended desktop over wi-fi. You can also use a second computer, say your laptop, as an extended desktop of your main pc. Quite usable, especially with one app on one screen, another app on the other. Can copy and paste just as if on same screen. Great for RootsMagic on one screen, web browser or image viewer, etc. on the other. SplashTop2: iPad as a remote virtual desktop, viewing and controlling your home pc from afar over a network, including the Internet. Using RootsMagic remotely is possible but much zooming of screen is needed. Requires fast connection. Ancestry: an app to interact with your Ancestry.com trees. Supposedly works with iPhone and iPod touch, too - designed for touch on small screens. Very effective but not as fully featured as the browser interface. Ancestry.com on the web browser: works but can be touchy ;-) on small screen. Not recommended for stubby or shaky fingers. Much more efficient on a computer with keyboard and mouse or touchpad, or a large touchscreen and keyboard. Nevertheless, I have been intensively working on Ancestry.ca with my iPad 2 and iOS 5 and encountered issues with the Safari browser - Ancestry randomly thinks I have logged out; Chrome has proven much more reliable. Panning in the family tree is replaced by jerky jumping. Haven't figured out how to capture a source image + citation in PDF; can grab image only or a screenshot as jpg to Photos and PhotoStream will sync to iCloud and to my pc. I also have two other genealogy apps but rarely use them as I have to interface with my RM database via GEDCOM with all of its attendant issues: GEDview and Mobile FT Pro. RootsMagic Reader app for Apple iOS is supposed to be out before end of year. Hopefully, it will have some easy synchronization with the RM computer, over the Internet at best or via iTunes at worst. If you are not already committed to the AppleVerse, I would hesitate to invest in an iPad for supporting your genealogy work on RootsMagic. Better to spend less money and get a more effective tool in a Windows netbook or a small laptop computer for $300 more or less. Run RM on it directly. Yes, it's heavier but the iPad does not fit in your pocket either. Yes, battery running time is probably half that of the iPad but you can find power outlets in many of the places you might be researching. Okay, half as sexy but half the price, and you already own the software, the keyboard is not an extra and you know how it all works. That said, I find the iPad great for triaging my email, browsing the web (although it won't play videos from PBS which are in Flash format, supposed to be supported in ios 6 nor do some sites work as intended), watching videos, Skype, I.e, anything not involving complex screens and many keystrokes. I have been reading Lisa Louise Cooke's _Turn Your iPad into a Genealogy Powerhouse_. (It was published in 2012 and is excellent for anyone with an iPad.) In Chapter 8, "Genealogy Apps," she mentions RootsMagic is now available at iTunes as an app for the iPad. I was going to download and install it, but a search on iTunes doesn't turn up anything ever close. Was the author premature in saying RM is now available? Thanks, Patricia
