Bruce, I've never used the Chart program before, but I can enter boxes, links, etc. but it won't let me enter text. That is probably because I'm not doing it right. When weird things happen, make a backup and then go to Files > Database Tools and use them in this sequence: Integrity (not ok?) -> Reindex -> repeat (Ok?)-> Clean -> Compact -> Integrity (better be ok!) Then try what you were having the error with again. No guarantees!
