Opening the database takes several minutes. Adding a single person in the bookmark list (Ctrl-B) also takes several minutes. Is this still the case with newer versions of RM? -- Jacques L'Heureux, Saint Louis, Missouri Yes Jacques. RM 4 and 5 and I assume 6 are very slow. My database is only 172,000 plus and I spend a lot of time waiting. But, I use them anyway because of the features. I also keep a gedcom and use it with RM 3 to find things and do searches since RM 3 is fast. And, I use two display screens so I open RM5 on one and RM3 on the other which helps. . For example, data retrieval from a slow disk drive, or using a slow CPU, can slow down the user experience. I have only 32,000 people in my database, and it seems quite fast. However, I have data files (Access and Filemaker ) that are much larger, in the order of 1.5 million names. Now when using these records, access to the data can seem very slow because of the disk access required. You might be able to speed up your RM by installing the program and the data files on a SSD (Solid State Drive). Access to data on a SSD is VERY fast. For example, tests on my 7200 RPM 1 TB HDD give and average access time of 15.0 ms (that's milliseconds). running the same test on my 120 GB SSD give 0.2 ms. That's 75 times faster in access time! Now that's only access time, and your RM won't run anywhere near 75 times faster overall, but I really believe you could see a huge improvement running a large database from a SSD. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.hoffpauir http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir
