    3. Dropbox is a completely separate program that has nothing to do with any version of RootsMagic. The latest RM is optimized to allow using Dropbox, but the utility is for sharing/syncing files between devices, such as PC, laptop, Mac, smartphone, etc. You "drop" files in the DropBox folder and they are copied automatically to the DropBox server and subsequently to any devices you have linked to your DropBox account. So you could keep your password data file in Dropbox and have it available for use on any device. Or a spreadsheet. Or your RM data files. Or you can give others access to specific files you wish to share. Dropbox provides 2 GB of storage free and you can purchase additional storage. Detailed info is available at www.dropbox.com I have been happily plodding along still using RM3, partly due to finances, partly because I've followed with some confusion all the varied questions on the list every time there's an upgrade. However, I'm interested in the small discussion about using Dropbox. I hadn't heard that before. Is this for backup AND for syncing? Can somebody please tell me which version of RM this facility became available? Would I have to go right up to version 6 to access this? And do I take it that this only involves Dropbox? I've currently using SugarSync for backup and syncing (and loving it) but I guess Dropbox is much the same. Thanks for any help and answers. I have downloaded Dropbox to my desktop, but don’t see how to get it on the laptop. Download it again? Log on from the laptop and it will so it itself? How do I tell Rootsmagic to backup files to Dropbox? Thank you, Nancy

    3. I started using dropbox as a backup "cloud" program for several years, specifically when I was using RM4. Suzie Henderson, website manager for Fannin Co., Texas' genealogy website introduced me to dropbox when she started using it to backup all the data for the Fannin County website. If you take a look at the "new" Fannin County, Texas website you will see it contains extrtraordinary amount of material with plans for adding two-three times data as much data as it now contains. Suzie tried several clouds and says she's happier with dropbox than any of the others. Many individiduals who submit data to Suzie generally do so via dropbox. The current goal of the website is to collect as obituary and/or death record, military records, etc., as can be found for each individual buried in Fannin County and "attaching" or linking that data to the "cemetery/burial" record. Eventually, land deeds and other misc. records may be added. Recently, I lost data I'd back up to another cloud, but all the genealogy and photos I'd backed up to dropbox was "safe" and downloadable. I'm very pleased with dropbox. Although I've not much effort to get free space by encouraging friends and acquaintances to use dropbox, over the years I've gained a fair amount of extra space by sharing gedcom's and/or photos via dropbox. Every time I close my RM software program, it is authomatically backed up to a folder I use for that purpose in dropbox.
