As we begin 2013, it occurs to me that I have been the RootsMagic-Users List Administrator for a year. I am grateful for all of the list subscribers who share their expertise and assist others with using the RootsMagic software. I have updated the welcome message that all new subscribers automatically get. To make certain that *all* subscribers know what it says, I am reproducing it at the end of this message. Regards, Drew Smith RootsMagic-Users List Administrator *** Welcome to the RootsMagic-Users Mailing List. The purpose of this list is to allow current or potential users of the RootsMagic software to ask questions or share information relevant to the use of the software. NOT AN OFFICIAL COMPANY VEHICLE: Although representatives from RootsMagic, Inc. monitor this list, the list is *not* an official communications channel for the company, and the company does not operate this list in any way. Do not share or request software registration keys or other private information on this list. To contact RootsMagic, visit their website at www.rootsmagic.com. INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT: Please do not send the following kinds of messages to the list: 1. "Test" messages, or any other message that concerns a problem with using the list itself. If you think that you are having a problem with using the list, email the list administrator directly. 2. "Thank you" messages. If you appreciate an answer that you got from another list subscriber, email that list subscriber directly. 3. Messages that are not about using the RootsMagic software but instead are about genealogy research in general or about specific families. Use other, more appropriate genealogy mailing lists for that kind of content. 4. Replies to digests where the subject line was not changed from the digest subject line to the original message subject line, or where the rest of the digest apart from the portion being responded to was not edited from the message. Failure to abide by this rule may result in your subscription being changed from digest mode to individual message mode. 5. Rude or insulting content. Messages containing this kind of content, at the sole discretion of the list administrator, may result in the list subscriber being placed on moderated status without warning. 6. Discussions about whether the content of someone else’s message is inappropriate or off-topic, or whether a topic has gone on for too long. If you have a concern about any of these issues, email the list administrator directly. OTHER TIPS: 1. When you are replying to a message, it is not necessary for you to include the entire message you’re replying to. Include only the relevant portions. 2. Use a brief but informative subject line that describes the content of your message. Do not use subject lines that consist of nothing more than "Help" or "Question" or "Problem".
