There are really three different options available: pre-RM6, RM6, and RM7. The pre-RM6 web pages are static HTML. A bunch of different kinds of Web pages are available: Family Group Sheets, Pedigree Charts, Pedigree Charts with group sheets, Ancestor Book, Descendant book, and Alphabetical book. You can do things like preview these pages on your hard disk, burn these pages to CD's to share with family members, and upload these pages to a Web site. But you are totally responsible for providing the Web site. You cannot use the free space provided by RootsMagic for these Web pages. If you upload these static Web pages to your own Web page or pages, they typically can be discovered by anybody who does a Google search. RM6 introduced a limited amount of disk space provided free by RootsMagic whereby you can create web pages from RootsMagic and RootsMagic will host them for you. The RM6 Web pages are not HTML at all. Rather, the web pages you see on the screen are generated dynamically at the time they are viewed. Unless you are pretty much into making Web pages, the difference between static HTML and dynamically created Web pages may be difference without a distinction. But the RM6 Web pages cannot be discovered by doing a Google search. Also, the RM6 Web pages have a very different look and feel than the pre-RM6 static HTML pages. Some people might prefer look and feel of the pre_RM6 pages and other people might prefer the look and feel of the RM6 pages. The RM6 Web pages can be previewed on your hard disk, burned to CD's to share with family members, uploaded to the free RootsMagic Web site, and uploaded to your own Web site. If you privatize RM6 Web pages (tell it not to display living people), the privatized data does not become a part of the data that is uploaded anywhere. By the way, the pre-RM6 Web pages still work in RM6 just like they did before. RM7 supports both the pre-RM6 Web pages and the RM6 style Web pages, in addition to supporting the new RM7 style Web pages. You can still do anything with the pre-RM6 Web pages that you could do before. You can still do most of the things with the RM6 Web pages that you could do before. However, the RM6 style Web pages can no longer be uploaded to the space provided for you for free by RootsMagic. If you want RM6 style Web pages to appear on the Web, you have to provide your own Web site. RM7 style Web pages have very much the same look and feel as do the RM6 Web pages, but the underlying technology is very different. On the positive side of things, RM7 style Web pages can be discovered by anybody who does a Google search. On the negative side of things, RM7 style Web pages cannot be previewed on your hard disk, they cannot be burned to CD's to be shared with family members, and data for privatized individuals is uploaded to you free RootsMagic Web pages but the pages are not displayed (or they are not displayed unless you have possession of a password). This latter point has generated some controversy about whether the security of the privatized data is good enough or not. I only use the pre-RM6 Web pages, so I'm a little fuzzy on one key point. I can't remember if RM7 Web pages can be uploaded to your own Web site, or if they can only be uploaded to the free space provided by RootsMagic. Jerry
Thank you for that thorough and understandable comparison of the three styles available for web pages - I have wondered about that ever since I loaded my RM7 update. I use the pre-RM6 for my web site - and I use both the family group sheets/pedigree style and the descendent narrative along with added articles and pictures. And I have a commercially hosted url (I Page). My concern is that now that RM seems to be migrating to their own web space, that down the line they will stop supporting this static HTML style. That would be fatal to me and others like me who use it and would force us to find another software program.
