Amen! When I first started researching my family, I got a head start with a compiled genealogy produced by about three generations of my family going back from my grandmother. And they had records that seemed to suport it. I incorporated that genealogy into my new research. Eventually, in the search for full documentation I came to the realization that that long established genealogy was incorrect - a case of same name, right time, right location - a major coincidence, but but the wrong progenitor. It took me about 2 years to completely research and document a new genealogy for the Roberts line. And everyone who copied and pasted information off my website, off my family tree, and didn't do any research on their own, copied wrong information. So I know whereof I speak - and I am appalled at the number of people who continue to copy genealogy from someone else's tree. Just 'cause it's on the internet, doesn't make it so. Just 'cause it looks right in name, time and place, doesn't make it so, either. I did that for 17 Naval records fir my dad. Then I put details in citations for each along with date, ship location, an signing officer and date. The whole idea is that someone cand trace your fact to the original and verify. Documents, computers, storages can burn, abandon, shutdown in the blink of an eye. Without sources your work is gossip.
