I have an ancestor who fathered 10 children with the same wife over 12 years, and I have now obtained the 10 birth certificates. Each states that he was a butcher and lived at the same place. Do people add 10 Occupation facts, each with a different source and 10 Residence facts, each with a different source to the one ancestor? I understand that philosophically / methodologically this is what should be done but doesn't such activity create a lot of clutter? This is posted here as I couldn't find anywhere else that seemed more suitable. If there is, I am happy for suggestions. Cheers Robert Salas (South Australia)
The birth certificates are primary and direct evidence of the birth of the individual. I would not use information from the birth certificate for the father's personal details. That information in considered secondary as the informant is unknown. Also, since it appears to be redundant it would, as you pointed out, "clutter" things. A caveat to that would be if you had conflicting information on the father's details and the birth certificates could corroborate already obtained information. I would put the occupation only on the Father between years x - y. Use an occupation note that reference was noted on the 10 children's Birth Certificates as his occupation. I would also use a Family Residence between those same years. Use an residence note that reference was noted on the 10 children's Birth Certificates as the parents' residence. Robert- I'm a TMG user just beginning to learn RM, so I don't know if what I'm about to say applies or not. In TMG, I entered each and every residence and occupation mentioned in every document with a "-" in front of the sentence that would be produced. This caused the sentence not to print. Then I created a Residence Summary and Occupation Summary fact whereby I summarized the information into a readable format. If my ancestor changed jobs partway through his life, I could create another Occupation Summary fact and place it where I wanted it to go in the narrative. I preferred to enter each instance separately so it would be placed in the timeline of his life, but it made for boring narratives. Does anyone know if the same thing can be accomplished in RM? I would add one occupation fact and one residence fact. You could cite all 10 certificates as sources, but I wouldn't. I'd probably cite the earliest, the latest, and one in the middle.
