    1. [RMagic] OPERATOR ERROR ---- several problems in the last week with RM ---
    2. Pat McGrath via
    3. For anyone that might have been following this thread about my multiple problems (at the bottom of this email), I wanted to let you know that Bruce did reply to me as follows in the middle of this message. I checked as he suggested and DID find multiple copies of my database on my computer in a folder marked DATABASE under RootsMagic on my MAIN computer and also one in a DATABASE folder in Dropbox. I have cleared all .rmgc files out of their current locations and into a file/folder on the MAIN computer marked OLD_DATABASES (which I was keeping in case the world comes to an end and I need to resurrect really old things along the path). I did, also, clean the .rmgc files (deleting them) so there are only two that reflect when I first started using RootsMagic and another which the name identified as possibly corrupt should I need to reproduce something within it. My question NOW is ----- WHERE is the BEST (fast, safe, etc) place to store THE ACTIVE DATABASE? In a folder in documents on my MAIN computer .. Or in a folder within Dropbox on my MAIN computer???? Opinions and reasons GREATLY APPRECIATED! Pat =========================== Reply from Bruce ============================= I suspect you have more than one database, possibly in different folders. 1. Backup and restore only zip and unzip the database, so backup / restore can't lose, change, or modify the data since the database isn't even opened or touched. 2. Again, backup / restore cannot touch, modify or change data. 3. Once again, it is impossible for the backup / restore to modify the database in any manner. Do File > Search for files and then search for RootsMagic files to see if you have more than one database that you are switching between. =========================== PROBLEMS ================================ 1) Husband and wife suddenly became the husband's parents back for 5 generations between when I backed up at night and restored in the morning 2) Worked a LOT on my sources, putting 15-20 source types into the favorites so I could re-use them quickly, had them GONE after the backup/restore process!!!! 3) Found out that the database I had just restored after the backup last night DID NOT MATCH the one I open in MOST RECENT and it should be the same database / same name, etc. I work on two computers a lot, but actually have not been when the above has happened!!!!! I ALWAYS backup when I get out of my database. File options set to dropbox with database_name_date to which I had a -A or -B or -M depending on how many times I work and get off each day. Whenever I go back into RM during the day I restore from -A or -B or -M depending on which was the most recent backup!!! I would think that would catch anything and everything .. but stuff is happening and I'm losing faith in both RootsMagic and myself ..

    3. Pay, since you don't want to keep the active database in dropbox, then I'd probably suggest that you just keep a copy of your backup in Dropbox. Just tell RM to point the backup folder to your dropbox folder. Leave your active database where you have it. Remember only use the rmgc file. You may never need the backup file - ever. 1. [RMagic] Update RM7 web sites?
    2. Jesse Davis via
    3. The dialog box does not seem to give me an option to select part of my file and tries to do the entire file which is too large to be accepted. I have 2 sites that were transferred from RM6. Now that I have the RM7 sites, how do I update them? The following worked to change them to RM7 and now they need updated. J. Davis You'll want to do this: > > 1. Click "CLICK TO CREATE A NEW WEBSITE" > 2. For the tree name, enter the name of the RM6 site you want to replace > 3. Continue with the wizard and choose the options you want > 4. The new site will replace the RM6 site with an RM7 site of the same name > > - Bruce

    3. Pat I store mine ion a folder marked RM7 with sub folders marked Databases; Backups; and Gedcom. I back these up by keeping copies off computer of each. I use DropBox, G storage and other semi-cloud locations. Having more than one computer I am able to access these from outside my main computer. I know others use Documents folder to do the same. My DropBox is downloaded to this computer for ease of use. G Storage is also on this computer. Both are synced to the other computers as well as their main Frame in the clouds. Storing to an external source is up to the user. You can use the Free or Paid versions. Being up in age and limited funds, I use Free versions. Nearly every Email has a small Free Storage setup. The choices are yours. These are mine.
