I don't know when this term "end of line" or EOL for short came into being. I only started seeing this term recently. People are using it after the surname of the "end of line" ancestors in GEDCOMs they are uploading to Ancestry and linking to their DNA. As a result the surnames don't show in a surname search of your DNA matches. For example entering SMITH eol in the surname field will not find SMITH surname DNA matches in a search.
