Are you running Windows 10? I have problems with it finding my external hard drive and hanging up for long periods when using Quicken. It worked fine with three or four earlier Windows versions. If I ask for a backup shortly after booting up, it works fine, but it wont even see the external hard drive using the Windows Explorer after I have been logged on for any length of time. Windows 10 keeps sending out upgrades, maybe they will get to this one before too long. And maybe your problem is something else.
