Margaret, The only time I have had a similar issue is when I have inadvertently minimized a window rather than closing it - the minimized window is sitting in the bottom left hand corner and you cannot then close the main window. I can't remember if I got any error message though - just an apparent lockup - solved by closing the offending minimized window.
