Yes, your database is so large that the relatively slow cd drive could greatly affect the speed of operations. You may have a slow cd drive - standard 1X speed reads around 11 MB per minute; there are drives that can speed up to 24X. Also, your observed speed may be negatively affected if the operating system is starved for RAM.
