Maybe an abberation, but I recently experienced a seeming contradiction to Tom's sage advice. Clicking the Delete option on each of 21 duplicate source templates, I identified 10 that gave NO warning that a source was attached. But fearful of doing so, I did NOT delete anything. Rather, from an alphabetically arranged Source List report containing pertinent Citations, I identified a number of duplicate Sources. When they were cleaned up the aforementioned 10 duplicate Source Templates disappeared.
