Hi Margaret, Yes, the Gedcom came from FTM2014. I could not import it into my TMG program, but I had already purchased RootsMagic in case TMG gave me too much trouble. That is the only database I have in RM, other than the Sample. I find each of those Alt-Names imported as a separate person. I am trying to clean up the database for my purposes. The owner who sent me the Gedcom is doing a rather large genealogy job. She asked me to get the marriage and death records. The death records we will need are restricted after 1965. I am mainly interested in the information for marriage records and death records. I just closed down RM. There was no way to stop the compacting. I made a backup. I hope it opens with no problems tomorrow. I have a 239,000 person database, and I compact quite frequently. I have never timed the process, but I do not think it ever took longer than one or two minutes (probably less), about the same for indexing. I have used all versions of RM except version 4. As I recall, I never used RM4, because -- if I am remembering correctly-- back that far, it ran much slower than version 3 did. Version 5 was great. I am wondering about the gedcom -- Did it come from a different program that used unusual features not in RootsMagic? Hopefully someone will provide an explanation. -----Original Message----- From: nancy wright via Sent: Sunday, April 24, 2016 7:24 PM To: rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [RMagic] Compacting for over an hour I have been removing some of the Alt-Names that came with a Gedcom. I removed about 30 at the most. Many of them were nicknames. I like the way RM handles those. After removing the Alt-Names I thought I should go through the Database tools. Everything was fine until I got to Compacting. There was an error message something about a report open, but I don't have any reports open. I closed everything down until the backup then used the database tools. It says it can take a long time for a large database. This has 3,3??. I don't think that is large enough to take that long at compacting. Will it be OK to just down the compacting or should I let it run overnight? This happens rather frequently when I run all the database tools in order. When I close RM and then reopen I immediately run the compact database and it works fine.
